Our Featured Trips for Late Summer 2011
Take a nice, cool late summer trip to the fantastic
Sierra Madre of northwest Mexico!

We have three great trips to choose from this summer and each of them offers unique opportunities to see great birds, spectacular scenery and enjoy interesting areas of the beautiful Sierra Madre and northwest Mexico.

August 11-16, 2011
$1900 ($375 single)
This tour is a great way to get a big dose of great Mexican birds including a number of endemics and a visit to one of the most spectacular natural wonders in all of north America, Basaseachic Falls!   We spend a full week in beautiful pine and oak habitat searching out a number of hig elevation specialty birds.  Possibilities include all of the birds on the following tour (Madera) plus Tropical deciduous specialties like Elegant Quail, Spotted Wren, Black-throated Magpie-Jay, Happy and Sinaloa Wren, Gray-crowned Woodpecker and Lesser Roadrunner. Click here for more details.

Aztec Thrush
Aztec Thrush in Yecora September 2010
August 19-22, 2011
$895 ($200 single)
This trip may not be long in duration but it is packed with great birds!  We will focus primarily on visiting the habitat of the Thick-billed Parrot, but there is also the possibility of seeing several other interesting Mexican birds like Eared Quetzal, Mountain Trogon, Russet Nightengale Thrush and Pine Flycatcher. This trip could easily be dove-tailed into a birding visit to southern Arizona for the "second spring", or for a quick introduction to Mexico birding for the tropical beginner.  Click here for details.

Thick-billed Parrots
Thick-billed Parrots
September 16-24, 2011
$2350 ($425 single)
This tour takes advantage of the "Chepe", the last passenger train in Mexico.  The route of the Chepe climbs up through impossibly rugged canyons from the humid lowlands in the state of Sinaloa to the cool emerald pine covered mountains of the Sierra Madre. The train trip alone is worth it; an amazing engineering feat that is still a marvel to this day.  But there is also the birding! The Sierra Madre is home to a number of Mexican specialty birds: Pine Flycatcher, Russet Nightengale Thrush, Striped Sparrow, Black-headed Siskin, Elegant Euphonia, White-striped Woodcreeper, Mountain Trogon and many more.  This is the best times of year to find the late-nesting Eared Quetzal. The lowlands are loaded with more including Yellow-winged Cacique, Russet-crowned Motmot, Black-throated Magpie-jay, Purplish-backed Jay, Sinaloa and Happy Wren and Yellow Grosbeak to name but a few.  Beyond the birds, throughout the trip we are able to appreciate the Tarahumara Indian culture which is alive and well,  Click here for details

NEWS FROM EL PEDREGAL IN ALAMOS

People are talking about El Pedregal!

Last November, our good friend, Rigdon Currie, traveled with us on a trip to thed and roscoe on rock Durango Highway and then came to spend a couple days at El Pedregal. One of his post-trip hobbies is to put together videos...follow the link below to see the video during his stay:

He also did a cool video on the local 20 de noviembre parade...Alamos shines on any parade day and this gives you some great insight into one of the town's great traditions! When you see the scenes in this video it helps to give another perspective about life in Mexico, beyond all the bad 'news' you hear these days!

On another occasion a nice guy, Ches, came up to look at El Pedregal because he was interested in alternative building practices. He ended up taking some great photos and posting them, along with brief descriptions, on a cool blog that he writes. And, in typical small world fashion, he's a friend of a friend!

Great reviews on Trip Advisor!

We think Trip Advisor is a great tool for travellers and we, personally, use it a lot as we research places we travel. And, we've had several people come stay with us because of our stellar reviews on Trip Advisor. The only thing we don't like about this site is their State Dept. warning and we are working on getting it removed!

Spring Feeder Madness!

David has been enjoying a few weeks off back at home in Alamos. In the mornings, he pours himself a cup of coffee and heads out the sit in the palapa and watch the feeder show! It's been amazing! Click on the link below to see some of his images from the last few days!
