Summertime in Alamos

 palapa and tree

Although summer time in Alamos is slow as far as tourism is concerned, there is an amazing array of exciting natural activity exploding all around us! Summer is a special time to visit this dynamic and unique area.  Personally, we enjoy the peace and quiet living here at El Pedregal and constantly marvel at how beautiful and interesting it is at this time of year. Certainly it can be warm and humid at times, but the beauty far out weighs the hardship of the heat, and the air conditioned casitas and a cold drink do a lot to take the edge off! We find ourselves commenting on how much people would enjoy it here in the summer if we could just get them to come down!  After years of working in tourism in Mexico we realize that summer tours to Mexico are a hard sell. So, call us crazy...but we are going to do just that! For this summer, we are offering low summer rates here at El Pedregal in hopes that you will find you way here to enjoy the green forest, the afternoon rains and the cold beer! We are also offering a long weekend green season package that includes a casita for three nights, breakfast and two private guided half day tours for $400 (for two people, tax included). For next summer, we'll be offering some longer tours that will highlight the tropical ecology of this area at its most prolific and exciting green season. Stay tuned...and see you this summer!

elegant trogonIf the nice price isn't enough to tempt you birders to come down... here's a quick run down of a three hour walk in Arroyo Cieneguilla that we did last Sunday morning that produced 50 species of birds! Military Macaw, Ivory-billed Woodcreeper, Lesser Road Runner, Yellow-green Vireo and Scrub Euphonia! And, here at El Pedregal, we are overrun with Yellow Grosbeaks, Rufous-bellied Chacalacas and Elegant Trogons! Yesterday, we had visits from Russet-crowned Motmots a Grayish Saltator, a very rare bird for Sonora. and a Mangrove Cuckoo! Birds are nesting all over El Pedregal...Love is in the air!

 FREE BEER!
On all of our Mexico trips, we are offering free beer at dinner time!
Not only are we the Mexico specialist when it come to running trips
in our adopted country, we have more fun and have incorporated local culture and customs...like cerveza!  What we have come to realize is that the price of beer is often equal to that of soft drinks in Mexico, so why not include a few beers in the tour price!  Salud!

ALASKA BIRDING TRIPS
with High Lonesome Bird Tours

green sandpiper

We recently returned from working in Alaska. Each year in the spring, we both go up to the remote, native village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island to work for High Lonesome Bird Tours. David guides and Jen cooks and we love the whole experience! This year, we had two great trips there and saw some excellent birds, including the very rare Green Sandpiper (above). Other notable birds were Smew, Greenshank, Ivory Gull and Rustic Bunting. On our last night there we witnessed a pod of Orcas hunting and consuming a Gray Whlae right off the point! A dramatic ending to a great couple weeks. David went on to lead trips in Nome and Barrow afterwards. We highly recommend the trips that High Lonesome offers in Alaska. If you are interested in more information, please go to

One of the things we firmly believe in is that the root of our success comes from the depth and strength of community we have created over the years. We appreciate and enjoy meeting the people that come stay with us in Alamos as well as those that have joined us on trips. The friendships and connections that develop are fulfilling for us and the web of community is woven further. Although times are tough for all, we believe that creativity, flexibility and community are what will see us all through. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in the months ahead!

Sincerely,

David and Jennifer MacKay
