Time to Spring Ahead!
 |
Thomas Wolf
March 2008
|
Wow, Daylight Saving Time really snuck up on us this year! Don't forget to "spring forward" this coming Sunday, March 13th, when we'll all set our clocks one hour ahead. We did a little sleuthing into the history of Daylight Saving Time, and discovered a really cool fact: time has not always been standardized like it is today. Did you know that in ancient Greece and Rome the amount of daylight on any given day was divided into 12 hours, regardless of the season? That means that summer hours not only felt longer than winter hours (oh, those blissful, endless summer days ... ), they actually were longer.
Endless summer days might still be a snowstorm away for us in Maine, but March is a great time to plan an organic garden, tune up your bike and dust off your helmet, and think SPRING!

 Start Planning Your Garden
March is the month when winter begins to loosen its tenacious grip on Maine. Time for mud season! However messy it can be, melting snow turns dormant earth into the fertile ground necessary for new plant growth. Soon it will be time to start sowing seeds, but first we thought we'd share some tips on planning a garden, as well as some events throughout the month that will be great resources for the novice and experienced gardener alike. Read on. |
