Time to Spring Ahead!

March 2008

Wow, Daylight Saving Time really snuck up on us this year! Don't forget to "spring forward" this coming Sunday, March 13th, when we'll all set our clocks one hour ahead. We did a little sleuthing into the history of Daylight Saving Time, and discovered a really cool fact: time has not always been standardized like it is today. Did you know that in ancient Greece and Rome the amount of daylight on any given day was divided into 12 hours, regardless of the season? That means that summer hours not only felt longer than winter hours (oh, those blissful, endless summer days ... ), they actually were longer.

Endless summer days might still be a snowstorm away for us in Maine, but March is a great time to plan an organic garden, tune up your bike and dust off your helmet, and think SPRING!

nordic walkingGet Moving with March into May

We're partnering with March into May to support physical activity in our community. Beginning March 14, this free 10 week program is celebrating its 13th successful year of helping Maine community members "Get more out of life." March into May is a successful program for many because you pick the activities you enjoy and set your own goals. You're also provided with the support that is so often missing from individual exercise plans, including convenient tools like the physical activity log, success tracker, weekly tips, and other online resources. It's a great way to kick-start a new healthy habit. Visit the

Start Planning Your Garden

March is the month when winter begins to loosen its tenacious grip on Maine. Time for mud season! However messy it can be, melting snow turns dormant earth into the fertile ground necessary for new plant growth. Soon it will be time to start sowing seeds, but first we thought we'd share some tips on planning a garden, as well as some events throughout the month that will be great resources for the novice and experienced gardener alike. Read on.
