Update on Federal tax credits for energy efficiency Great News! The new tax legislation signed into law in December included an extension of sorts to the federal tax credits for home energy upgrades. Some of the eligible improvements include heating and ventilation systems, roofs, water heaters (non-solar), and windows and doors. While the tax credits were extended, the maximum amount allowed was reduced to 10% of materials cost up to $500 (with some smaller limits on individual improvements.) Solar, wind, and geothermal upgrades credits continue to be available until December 31st of 2016. Read more.
In addition to the federal tax credits, Efficiency Maine offers rebates of up to $1500 on home energy efficiency upgrades (up to $3000 if you had a home energy audit by 12/31/10). To qualify, you must start with a home energy audit. The process can be a little confusing - but have no fear, there's help. The Efficiency Maine website offers a step by step guide, and local non-profit Maine Green Energy Alliance also provides free assistance to walk you through the process.
