Results of AOMSM Insurance Survey

One hundred and sixty nine people took the AOMSM Insurance Survey in November.  The 126 women and 43 men, with an average age of 46, were overwhelmingly in favor of expanding insurance coverage for acupuncture, both in Massachusetts (80%) and as part of the Federal Employees Benefits package and Medicare (81%).  40% of respondents take credit cards for payment in their offices and 42% offer a sliding fee scale.  The survey revealed some interesting things about current insurance practices.  87% of respondents estimated that, in the past year, less then 10% of their acupuncture treatments had been reimbursed by insurance.  75 people provide their clients with a bill for the client to be reimbursed by their insurance and most of them are "happy" or "very happy" with how that works.

You can see a complete summary of the results from the AOMSM insurance survey at www.aomsm.org.   There is also a separate file of all the comments that people wrote in.  (Comments Click Here)

The Insurance Task Force is working on developing a plan of action.  The next step is to contact the people who identified they are interested in working on this issue.  We are also learning about the activities of the legislative committee of the national acupuncture organization, AAAOM, and their efforts to include acupuncture in the plans for health care reform being developed by the Obama administration.  With the resources available to us, should we focus on federal legislation which could supersede anything Massachusetts does, or concentrate on developing a local strategy?

If you would like to get involved on the insurance task force, please contact Ellen Highfield at eshighfield@comcast.net.
AOMSM CO-SPONSORS
"AOM ETHICS AND LIABILITY" SEMINAR

On Saturday, April 4, Michael Taromina, Esq. and Betsy Smith, Deputy Director, NCCAOM, will be presenting a one-day course "AOM Ethics and Liability" at the New England School of Acupuncture.  The course provides an overview of professional ethics, liability, and risk and will teach effective risk management and problem prevention strategies for acupuncturists.  The course fulfills the NCCAOM Safety and Ethics requirement.  AOMSM is co-sponsoring the seminar and AOMSM members receive a 20% discount on the registration fee.

This is a unique opportunity to learn from two leading experts in this field.  The presentation will be full of examples from actual cases and will help participants understand risk in order to prevent or limit problems.

Some of the topics to be covered include:
    - existing and emerging trends of risk for
         AOM practitioners
    - proper termination of the acupuncturist/patient
       relationship
    - potential problems with dual state licensure
    - patient rights and practitioner responsibilities
    - boundary violations

For more information and to get information about how to register, see the seminar flyer at www.aomsm.org.
 COMING THIS SPRING -
 INSURANCE SEMINAR

The recent discussion about insurance reimbursement has identified a need in the MA AOM community for further training in insurance billing so that practitioners are able to help their clients who currently have insurance coverage for acupuncture get reimbursed.   In response to this, AOMSM is working with the American Acupuncture Council to bring their one day seminar on "Maximizing Insurance Reimbursement for your Patients and For Acupuncturists" to the Boston area.  AOMSM members will receive a discount on seminar registration.

AOMSM will send out specifics of the seminar as soon as a date and location has been settled on.

NEW ACUPUNCTURE REGULATIONS

A copy of the new Massachusetts acupuncture regulations is now available at www.massmedboard.org/acupuncture/ as well as a section by section summary of the changes.

Many of the changes in the regulations apply to first time applicants for an acupuncture license.  For practitioners who are already licensed, the most signifiant change is for those acupuncturists who are approved to use herbs in their practice.  After July, 2009, in order to continue prescribing herbs, during the 2 year license renewal period you must take 10 hours of continuing education directly related to herbs.  This means that of the 30 hours of continuing education required to renew your license, 10 of those hours must be in herbs.

Please take the time to look at the regulations.  This was the first major revision of the regulations since they were first issued.  You'll find they have been completely updated.

 OPENING ON AOMSM BOARD

In this new era of volunteerism and service, one of the domains that could use your skills, your time and your energy is your profession.  There will be an opening on the AOMSM board in April and this is a request for you to consider joining eight other dedicated colleagues working on behalf of AOM in Massachusetts.  The most important "skill" required of all board members is a commitment to getting involved and working together advancing the AOM profession.   If in addition you happen to have experience with website development/technology, writing/publications or membership development, those are some specific areas we could put you to work on right away!

If you are interested or want more information, please contact Susan Patten at crodby1205@yahoo.com.
