Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!
As 2007 comes to a close, we want to thank everyone for your tremendous support throughout the past year!  We are blessed by terrific volunteers and donors.  You make this community a better place for all of us!  We wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Venture Grants Awarded

United Way recently awarded two venture grants to local agencies.  Venture grants are awarded to begin new programs in the community or enhance existing programs.

The Children's Center for Communication and Development received $5,000 to expand and enhance their audiological testing services.  The Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse also received $5,000 to implement a family strengthening and pregnancy prevention program for high-risk youth.

United Way is proud to fund these services that are much needed in our community.

Campaign Making Good Progress
United Way of Southeast Mississippi's 2007-2008 Campaign is still going strong as we work toward our goal of raising $1.6 million.  As of early December, we have reached 80% of our goal, with several workplace campaigns not yet reported.  Although the Campaign is still in progress, we would like to give special recognition to the campaigns that took the "100 Day Challenge" and turned in their results by the target deadline in mid-November.  To see the full list of campaigns that turned in by the deadline, visit our website.

United Way would also like to thank all the organizations that made an extra effort to have fun with their campaigns, such as The First which held a Kiss-the-Pig contest.  John Shappley (above) was the lucky winner who got to kiss a pig for United Way, and he raised $1,700 while doing it!  To see more pictures from this year's Campaign, check out our website.

The Salvation  Army

The Red Kettle and Angel Tree campaigns have begun!  Money raised in the Red Kettle campaign is used to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, Christmas assistance, gifts to nursing home residents and winter relief through the emergency family services program.  Volunteers are crucial to the success of the program.  Individuals or church or civic groups are encouraged to be bell ringers this year.  Volunteers are also needed to work at the Angel Tree sign-up table and to help with Angel Tree and Christmas food distribution.  To learn about the many volunteer opportunities this season, please contact Joy Lines at 601-544-3684.

A Gingerbread Bake Off to benefit The Salvation Army will take place Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Lake Terrace Convention Center.  You could win a plasma tv or a laptop computer!  For more information, call Barbara at 601-270-9000.
Christian Services

You can now eat at Firehouse Subs and support Christian Services at the same time!  Pick up a card at Christian Services to use at Firehouse Subs on Highway 98 West.  Ten percent of your purchase will be donated to Christian Services.  This promotion will run until Jan. 1, 2008.  If you'd like cards for your business, please call 601-582-5683.

Christian Services served over 2,200 Thanksgiving meals on November 20 to people at the main location and through deliveries made by Meals on Wheels and the Compassion Van.  This endeavor would not have been possible without the help of about 400 volunteers!  Thank you to all who help make this ministry possible.
