Celebrating Music: Mahler 2 "Resurrection" Saturday, May 8 at 8pm |
The Bob Cole Conservatory of Music presents
Celebrating Music: Mahler Symphony No. 2
Saturday, May 8 at 8pm
CSULB Carpenter Center
Conducted by Johannes Müller-Stosch, and featuring the University Symphony Orchestra and the combined choirs of the Cole Conservatory, this evening concert will also recognize the achievements of Bruce Leek, a distinguished alumnus from the music programs at CSULB.
Mahler was justifiably proud of his Second Symphony, describing it in a letter to a friend: The effect is so great that one cannot describe it...the whole thing sounds as though it came to us from some other world. I think there is no one who can resist it. One is battered to the ground and then raised on angel's wings to the highest heights."
Tickets for Celebrating Music: Mahler 2 are $15 for the general public, $10 for students, seniors and those with CSULB ID.
For more information or to purchase tickets for this or any other Cole Conservatory event, call (562) 985-7000 or visit the CSULB Arts Ticket Office Online. |

The CSULB Department of Design has enjoyed a banner year of student awards and recognitions. At the IIDA Southern California Student scholarship competition, our students earned two of the four scholarships offered. Alice Yoon won the Social Relevance in Interior Design Competition Scholarship - $5,000 (renderings of her winning design is shown above), while Ashley Dowel won the Stephanie Tarr Competition Scholarship, a $5,000 award honoring well-rounded design excellence. Three of the five finalists for the F3 Student Furniture Design competition are CSULB Design majors: Jamison Hammers, James Hanley, and Lauren Montgomery. The remaining two spots were taken by students from the Art Center College of Design. The winner will be announced on May 21, but we're exceedingly proud of the work by our students and by the strong showing of our department and programs. |

| CSULB College of the Arts Commencement Ceremony
Friday, May 28 at 9am | | |
There is, perhaps, no more important event at the University each year than our Commencement Ceremonies. The College of the Arts expects almost 600 graduating students to participate in our Commencement. All our friends, patrons, alumni and current students are invited to attend and help celebrate this special day and accomplishment with our graduates.
Our commencement speaker this year is Jay Samit. A media innovator, Mr. Samit has spent the past 25 years pioneering new forms of film, video, and music production and digital distribution. As Executive Vice President of Sony Corporation of America, he built and ran their digital initiatives. As Global President of Digital Distribution & Development for EMI, he broke new ground for the music industry with forays into wireless OTA, ringtones, streaming radio, secure P2P and subscription business models. At Universal Studios, Mr. Samit built one of the first on-line million member social networks. He is currently Chief Executive Officer of Long Beach Studios, anticipated to be the largest independent production facility in the world. We are very pleased to welcome Mr. Samit to CSULB for our commencement ceremonies.
All CSULB Commencement ceremonies take place in the central quad area of the campus, adjacent to the Fine Art buildings.
