"Not Your Average Night at the Opera"

Based on short stories by ETA Hoffmann, Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann explores the blurring of the conscious and subconscious mind through the author's twisted memories of three women. We travel from Nuremburg to Munich and Venice where we are treated to the music of grand opera, musical theatre and even high farce - including Offenbach's famous "Barcarolle," "Doll Song" and "Septet." Sung in French with English supertitles.

Sunday, April 11 2-8pm
CSULB Art Department
Student Galleries and FA Buildings

As you probably already know, more people study art and design at CSULB than at any other public university in the nation. Part of the reason for that is we offer one of the largest MFA programs on the West Coast, featuring ceramics, printmaking, painting and drawing, metals, sculpture, fiber, photography, video, performance, illustration, and visual communication design.

This Sunday, in addition to our regular weekly gallery openings, more than 40 of our MFA campus studios will be open to the public. Don't miss this special opportunity to experience both completed pieces and works-in-progress. You can meet the artists and get a glimpse "behind the scenes."

Our weekly artist receptions and exhibit openings take place on Sunday evenings from 5-7pm. Join us as we celebrate our students' unique views and voices.

CSULB University Players opens The Mighty Gents
Friday, April 16
Cal State Long Beach University Players opens The Mighty Gents by Richard Wesley, on April 16 in the CSULB Players Theatre. Directed by CSULB alumnus Baron Kelly, the play tells the tale of an aging gang that once ruled the Central Ward of Newark, New Jersey. Now in their thirties and down on their luck, the Gents are left only with their recollections of past successes. Longing to relive their glory days, they decide to stage a grand robbery. When the caper does not go as planned, the Gents turn on each other like vultures, proving their years of camaraderie were ultimately meaningless.

Once called The Last Street Play, The Mighty Gents premiered on Broadway in 1978, starring Morgan Freeman. Since then, casts have included such greats as Samuel Jackson and Denzel Washington. Playwright Richard Wesley is an African American playwright and screenwriter who serves as Associate Professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Director Baron Kelly is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Chapman University. He holds a diploma from London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, an MFA in Acting from CSULB, and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His production of David Rabe's Streamers was recently chosen for the American College Theatre Festival. As an actor he has appeared on Broadway and Off-Broadway stages, and in over thirty of America's regional theatres - most recently in South Coast Repertory's acclaimed production of Fences. The Mighty Gents opens April 16, and runs through May 1. Performances are Tue-Sat at 8 pm, with 2pm matinees on Apr 24 and May 1. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors and students.
