Special Report | Summer 2010 |

Greetings!
As promised I continue to dive right into the new Federal trucking and driver regulations. While it would appear that I am pursuing this subject in exhaustive detail, I feel it is necessary since we are going from the safestat system, which monitored less than 5% of the truckers and fleets, to a system that will be intensely watching all fleets 24 hours a day. I also include some business tips and have some offers for our readers. Don't hesitate to email me with any questions, concerns, or ideas you might have. Sincerely,
Michael Saks

SOME PENALTIES CARRY GREATER WEIGHT |
A closer look at preventing warnings, sanctions, and shutdowns from the Federal government concerning our truck and trailer fleets. The first key is to watch your scorecard. I cannot stress this enough. The Federal regulatory system is taking the last 24 months of data to give you your beginning rating, This means that even before they actually start monitoring, past data could quickly put in you in peril. In the Transport Topics article " What Carriers Need to Know" by Rip Watson, a CSA Advisory company known as Vigillo did a mock study with the existing data to see how carriers would do. They found that 78% of all carriers would score poorly based on the data from the last 24 months. On the surface this looks somewhat unreasonable, but there are coping strategies to reduce its impact. One recommendation I would make would be to come out of the gate and perform well at the start of the program since you are graded against your peer group. I don't strongly believe the government will immediately go after two thirds of the driving fleets in America, but I would bet they are banking on a continuation of marginal or unfit behavior to continue by some fleets once the program begins. This will allow them to weed out unsafe drivers and fleets.
There are no real warnings in this system since everything is graded against your record. Also watch the types of violations both for drivers and fleets. Some violations carry a higher number which is bad. These can quickly open the door to more government involvement via letters, inspections, claims, and potentially a shut down. I have placed a violation ranking chart on our blog. Click the links to see it.
There is a lot more to be said about this. The links to the original article are on our towing, autohauling, and trucker blogs and you can access it there. To link to the blogs click here. Towedover.blogspot.com for Towers or Autohauling.blogspot.com for Carhaulers

EMAIL MARKETING |
If you are thinking of starting an email marketing campaign there are a lot of things that need to be done ahead of time to save you from trouble as you go along. Always bear in mind that you must do email campaigns with the highest professionalism to avoid spoiling your business.
Avoid Spam
Make sure that when you begin your email campaign that you have an easy to use unsubscribe feature included. Recipients who do not want your emails may flag them as spam otherwise and cause you problems. If your emails are constantly being flagged as spam, you could ultimately find yourself banned from certain hosts.
Well Thought Out
Make sure your email campaign is well thought out. If you are doing a campaign that involves sign ups to a newsletter make sure that it is stated clearly in your campaign. Do not make people guess what your email is about. Having proper information, well laid out and of high value will keep prospects interested.
SEO Value
Do not forget that your email campaign will have some SEO value. In your email campaign, have a link to your website or blog. This can help you build long term links back to your site as you may have subscribers to your email campaigns share your link with others in their network
Provide Only "Teasers"
Another effective use of your email campaigns is to provide teaser material that will encourage the reader to actually go to your site to read the rest of the entry. This is smart business, since typically people will not simply read the single item they are interested in, but will also explore your site in detail.
Keep It Honest
Do not provide links to items unrelated to your "blurb" or "teaser". Readers will quickly become annoyed if you are asking them to "click to read more" only to find out that "more" is an obnoxious advertisement to a product that has nothing to do with the content they were reading.
Respect Your Readers Wishes
If a reader requests that you unsubscribe them from your email list do so immediately. Don't make these common email marketing mistakes if you hope to have success Pilar. "Marketing Using Email." articlealley.com. June 9, 2010. |
