Concussion
Women are at more risk!
Did you know that every time you play soccer, whether it's during a game or at practice, you put yourself at risk for brain injury?  Did you know that women are at higher risk than men?  The use of your head to change the direction of the ball is a key skill in soccer.  In fact, the header is one of the most challenging skills to master in the game.  But did you know that headers are not the only way you can injure your head, and in fact, they're the least common?

A variety of head injuries are possible in soccer, including bruises, cuts, breaks and concussions. The two most common concussion symptoms are confusion and amnesia. The amnesia, which may or may not be preceded by a loss of consciousness, almost always involves the loss of memory of the impact that caused the concussion. Signs and symptoms of a concussion may include: Confusion, Slurred Speech, Amnesia, Fatigue, Headache, Memory or concentration problems, Dizziness, Sensitivity to light and noise, Ringing in the ears, Sleep disturbances, Nausea or vomiting, Irritability, Depression.

Although most concussions get better on their own, some blows to the head can cause more-serious injuries. Seek medical advice if you have any of the following symptoms: Prolonged headache or dizziness, Impaired balance, Vision or eye disturbances (including pupils that are bigger than normal or of unequal sizes), Prolonged memory loss, Ringing in the ears, Loss of smell or taste, Nausea or vomiting.

There are a variety of ways you can trigger a concussion.  The good new: intentional heading has been shown to be safe.  The bad news: concussions are more commonly due to accidental contact with other hard surfaces (i.e., opponent's elbow or head, ground, etc.).  Another piece of bad news: current research shows that women are at higher risk of concussion while playing soccer than men.  Considering the four previously mentioned types of injury, the most commonly diagnosed injury was soft-tissue bruising (57% for men and 41% for women). The next most common injury in men was a cut (21%), but for women, the next most common head injury was a concussion (22%).  Here are some important statistics:

  • The frequency of concussion is 2.4x higher in woman
  • Females are 1.75x more likely to die of a traumatic brain injury
  • 1.57x more likely to experience poor outcomes in severe concussion (i.e severe disability, persistent vegetative state)
  • 1.7x more likely to experience cognitive impairment following concussion

If you experience any of the above symptoms it is important that you let your Licensed Athletic Trainer, coach, or parents know immediately.  Doing so can minimize the severity of the injury and make sure that you are safe to return to the field as soon as possible.

My name is Ben Holzman and I am a physical therapist working at ATI Physical Therapy.  If you have any other questions about concussions or are concerned that you might have a concussion, please contact at our Mequon office to set up an appointment: (262) 241-6777.
Incontinence Advice
  tri-motion logo
Have you experienced leaking while running or kicking the ball?  Has leaking limited or stopped you from playing the sport you love?  If so, know that you are not alone and that there is help available to gain control over your bladder.

1 in 4 women between the ages of 30 and 60 have experienced urinary incontinence at some time in their life.  Some contributing factors to developing incontinence of the bladder or bowel are from pregnancy and childbirth, menopause, pelvic or abdominal scarring/surgery, too much caffeine or smoking and high-impact exercise.  Incontinence may improve on its own but often it worsens without intervention.

How can physical therapy help?
Because many symptoms of urinary incontinence are caused by pelvic floor muscle
weakness and dysfunction, a specially trained Women's Health Physical Therapist is the
ideal provider to help you.  Here at Tri-Motion Rehab, Dr. Emily is the lead therapist of our Pelvic Health Program.  She works with men and women who have urgency and incontinence of the bowel and bladder.  Dr. Emily will evaluate you and recommend an individualized treatment program that addresses your specific situation.

Your Physical Therapy Treatment may include:
  • Education on diet and nutrition to avoid food and drinks that may irritate the
    bladder
  • Advice on how to change behaviors that make symptoms worse
  • Techniques to help you find the right muscles and learn to use them correctly
  • Pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles
  • Exercises to stretch and strengthen other important muscles
  • Ways to decrease urinary urge and frequency
  • Biofeedback that shows you how your muscles are working
  • Electrical stimulation to improve awareness and strength of the muscles
Tri-Motion Rehab would like to help by:
  • Giving you control over your life and your bladder
  • Encouraging you to return to full participation in life's activities without worry of leaking
  • Saving you money and embarrassment by allowing less use of pads and undergarments
  • Reducing the use of medications for incontinence
  • Possibly preventing the need for surgery
We would like to talk with you if you or someone you know has leaking of urine during normal daily activities, sneezing, coughing or laughing; if you have difficulty starting the urine stream; experience urinary frequency or urgency (having to go more than every 3-4 hours during the day, up more than once to urinate at night) or are having difficulty getting to the bathroom in time because of other issues such as hip or knee pain or balance problems.  Give us a call today at 262-754-1650 to set up your free consultation.
