Summer Pedaling - Article provided by Tri-Motion Rehab

Summer PedalingSummer Pedaling

Whether you are a serious bicyclist or a recreational rider, when it comes to bicycling, you and your bike should fit well together.  A proper bike fit minimizes discomfort, increases efficiency, and helps prevent pain or injury.  The following positioning guidelines are recommended by the American Physical Therapy Association.

Trunk Position and Shoulder Angle
For the recreational rider, trunk position should be 40-80 degrees from horizontal.  Shoulder angle should be between 80-90 degrees.  For the road cyclist, trunk position should be between 30-40 degrees and shoulder angle should be between 90-100 degrees.

The Handlebars
Handlebar position will affect your hand, shoulder, neck, and back comfort as well as the handling of your bicycle.  For the road cyclist, correct handlebar positioning will provide better pedaling efficiency, aerodynamics, and improved safety with cornering and braking.  The width of the recreational rider's handlebars should allow hands to be slightly wider than shoulders.  For the road cyclist, hands should be approximately 2 cm wider than the shoulders for comfort and to help ensure good handling of the bicycle.

Knee to Pedal
A physical therapist can measure the angle of your knee to the pedal.  The closer the angle is to 35 degrees, the better function you will have with less stress on the knee.  For the recreational cyclist, the angle should be 35-45 degrees.  The road cyclist should have a 30-35 degree angle.

The Saddle
The saddle on your bike should be level.  If the saddle tips downward, pressure will be placed on your hands and lower back.  The saddle also should be a comfortable distance from the handlebars-too close, and extra weight will be placed on your mid-back and arms; too far away, and you may put extra strain on your lower back and neck.

Foot to Pedal
Position the ball of your foot over the pedal spindle for the best leverage, comfort, and efficiency.  A stiff-soled shoe is best for comfort and performance.

Dance, Dance, Dance!
Fred Astaire Dance Studios Success Stories

This past June I visited the Jazz Festival in the Third Ward and people were dancing in the streets.  They were having so much fun and I wanted that too.  Dancing had always been something that I wanted to learn, but never seemed to make time for.  Now, as an "empty-nester," I have some time.

I scheduled my first lesson at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, and arrived a few minutes early to observe others, that's what I do best - WATCH!  I was thinking that I would never be able to move with the skill and grace that I was witnessing.

My instructor introduced me to all the basic steps that only involved my feet.  Hey, feet are needed for more than just walking or running!  My demands of my instructor were to "make me dance," which required him to repeat instruction multiple times, but he had the patience of a saint.  When I finally got it; I wanted more.  What I have learned cannot be fairly put into words, however I will try.

Dancing is so much more than just moving your feet.  When all is synchronized, the most amazing euphoria happens and then you're dancing!!  It's the most awesome feeling.  Did I mention how sexy dancing is?  My newly discovered happiness is dancing.

My job is full of spreadsheets, numbers, and meetings.  Daily activities are mundane and boring.  You know what I mean; those meetings where you need to pinch yourself to stay awake.  Well, now during those meetings, I count the hours until my next dance lesson.  All of the instructors and staff at Fred Astaire care a great deal for each student's success.  They are the most beautiful people you will ever meet this side of heaven.  It's almost as if you have joined a new family - with a large extended family.  Our family gets together every Friday evening for the Friday Night Parties, which are always a blast.

I highly recommend dancing to everyone; especially if it is taught by one of Fred Astaire Dance Studios' talented instructors.  Just think, if everyone danced their way to happiness, there would be no need for therapy or mood enhancing medication.  Did I mention how sexy dancing is?  Things my mother never taught me.

VIP ComedySportz Dinner Party

The VIP ComedySportz Night was so much fun thanks to the hard work of Open B Falcons team representatives - Amanda Zielinski, Kyla Sander, Courtney Arreola and Greta Voit. GREAT JOB!! I am VERY happy that ~90 guests were able to attend for a free dinner and a show for all volunteers who can fit it into their busy schedules attend. The awesome raffle prizes won and butterfly garden flower seeds for everyone were an added bonus.

Lisa Hollander & Michael Laskosky were hilarious. IF you need a sound effect guy, look no further - Michael is your man. He can do ANY sound. He is AWESOME! Lisa has a hidden talent that we found! Not only is she an amazing soccer player but she can actually fill in the words to  sentences without hesitation. She is AMAZING!

Thank you to everyone who got involved with the WSC by giving 4 hours of your precious time this year. It is MORE helpful to me than you know.

Hope that you all can come next year - PLEASE SAVE the DATE - VIP ComedySportz Night is set for Sat June 5, 2010 at 6:00pm. It is my way of saying thank you for giving me your precious time of 4 hours or more/ year.

THANK YOU again for ALL your help. It is TRULY appreciated.
