Strength Training vs.Aerobic Training
ati
When it comes to working out, many people have a lot of questions.  Questions about which exercises; machines versus free weights; low repetitions versus high repetitions; how many sets; should I do my cardio before or after I lift.  These are all questions that have answers, but the answers depend on the goals and objectives you have for yourself.
For cardiovascular workouts, the length of your session determines whether the calories you burn are from fat or from carbohydrates.  It takes your body at least 15-20 minutes before you start to burn fat.  The reason being is that your body's initial energy systems burn carbohydrates.  After you run out of that initial energy, the body starts to burn fat.  Sometimes you can tell when this is happening as you feel you're getting your "second wind."  Obviously, if you are attempting to lose weight, you want to burn as much fat as possible.  That means to maximize your fat burning, you need to continue your cardio workouts for as long after 15 minutes as possible.  According to research,, when you decide to perform your cardio makes no difference.  The difficult part of working out is that most people don't have over an hour to spare for their entire workout, much less just cardio.  Cross training is one way to add some cardio-like activity to your weight lifting workout.  Try doing four to six lifting exercises, one right after the other.  This will keep your heart rate up and keep you moving, while also getting some lifting exercises in.
When it comes to strength training, the number of repetitions that you perform for each exercise determines the response of the muscles.  When deciding your workout routine, you must decide what goals you want to achieve.  After deciding on your goals and picking which exercises you are going to perform, you need to decide how many sets and reps you will perform.  For gaining power, doing 1-3 reps is what you must complete.  For gaining muscle size, you should perform 4-6 reps.  For increasing muscle strength, you must complete 6-8 reps.  For muscle toning, 8-10 reps and for muscle endurance 12-15 reps.
Regardless of your goals for your workouts, make sure to switch things up every few weeks to keep yourself from getting caught in that all-too-familiar workout rut.  It's easy to keep doing the same workout week after week, but to keep your body off guard and to challenge your muscles, changing your workout is essential.  In the end, there are an infinite number of ways to reach whatever goals you may have.  Keep some of these simple guidelines in mind and hopefully they will help you succeed.

Once again, please contact me with any questions or ideas for future articles.

Ginny Player Spotlight
spotlightMaking a Difference

With her blond ponytail swinging back and forth, she confidently charged down the field with the ball as she dribbled through player after player. With determination etched on her face, she had one thought on her mind. That ball would go in the net. She would not be denied. She faked to the right and then she burst forth with her incredible speed! She rocketed off a shot in the upper 90. SCORE!!!  The Open B Falcon's bench erupted with cheers and high fives! "YEAH Tally!"

Who is Tally? Talia Kosinski was born in Kansa City, Missouri to Daniel and Terry Kosinski where her parents met and married after her dad got out of the Marine Corps. She has a younger sister Rebecca, 20 years old who is recently married to Cameron. When she was 9 months old, her family moved to a small town called Antigo, Wisconsin which is four hours north of Milwaukee. "My grandpa Kosinski owned a small farm where he raised Angus cows. So when we moved up north it was to help my grandpa out on the farm. I loved being raised in the country; I guess you could say I was quite the tomboy growing up! I still enjoy helping out during the haying season, great workout!"
 Talia Kosinski -HayDay
Talia graduated from Antigo High School in 2002. She then joined the Air Force for four years and was stationed in England, Turkey, Iraq, and Kuwait. She has not graduated from college yet, but her intended major will be Political Science. She is working towards a law degree in the future. Currently, Talia works at the Milwaukee Veterans Hospital as a patient transporter "Health Tech". "I love my job! I basically transport patients to their appointments around the hospital. This is not something I could do forever, but it's a great part time job while I'm going to school. I'm confident when I say that I've always been able to connect to the elder community. And being a vet myself, I would have to say the best part of my job is hearing all the different military stories from patients that range from Vietnam to the WWII era. It's a job that I can take pride in at the end of the day, just knowing that I'm serving fellow veterans." She says earnestly.

She met her boyfriend Michael Krausz while she was in the Air Force. "I was stationed in Turkey when I found out that I was tasked to deploy to Iraq. Ramstein AB Germany needed a supply tech because all of their people were deployed also. So when I arrived to Iraq I was running an aircraft supply shop with one other technician. Mike was on a different shift than I was, but in between shifts I noticed that he would hang around our office more frequently than he did when I first arrived. So I found out that there was a volleyball league going on (they offer things like this to keep the morale up of the deployed). And that's where I met him, playing volleyball in IraqJ Actually Mike was suppose to leave 2 weeks after I got to Iraq because he had spent 5 months over there already. But he volunteered to stay back for his replacement. We went through a lot just to see each other every day; I really feel fate was on our side. We have been together now for 3 years and spent about a year and a half of that in a long distance relationship. But things are going good for us both."

Talia Kosinski 4 wheeling  When asked when did she start playing soccer and how did she find out about the WSC, Talia explained, "Soccer wasn't offered at our school until I was a freshman in high school. And at that time I was running track and field. So my sophomore year I decided to try something different. That was the first time I ever touched a soccer ball! I found out about the WSC while I was playing in a volleyball league and was fairly new to Milwaukee. I asked one of the ladies that I played with (Joan Heidenrich -now also a WSC member on the O30B team Eagles), "Where I could find a city soccer league?" She told me that she knew the lady who ran WSC and told me that I should look into this organization." Talia was placed on the Falcons team soon after. Talia continued. "I like to play a lot of sports. But right now I play on a volleyball league in Mequon. And when I have some free time I enjoy playing racquetball. I play soccer for the love of the game! If you play just to play, I would call that a sport. But if you can connect to the art of the game its more than just a sport, it's a passion." Being active and playing sports has always been a big part of Talia's life. But during the winter months she likes to go snowmobiling and most of all snowboarding. During the summer months, she goes forewheeling a lot. "I just recently bought my own motorcycle (Kawasaki Ninja) so I'm totally pumped to go riding this summer!!!"
 Talia Kosinski-snowboarding
In addition to her busy life, Talia has found photography. "I love the idea of capturing a moment; whether it's with family and friends, or capturing a surreal landscape. Just being able to document your life or a beautiful moment with pictures can be priceless. And what gets me most of all, is one photo can be interpreted a thousand different ways.  If I had to choose my favorite photographer, I would definitely choose Jacob Riis and Dorothea Lange. They both documented and left a major impression with viewers of the critical times during the early 1900's. I also enjoy reading (and if you knew me when I was younger, this would come as shocking to you!) But the corny expression, "knowledge is power" is so true. I mostly read political, history, or documentary books." Talia smiled.

Talia's favorite thing to do is traveling. She likes exploring the beauty that is all around her. While in the military, she traveled all over Europe; that was her second experience outside of the United States. She just loves the freedom she feels when she's on the road, or seeing a historical site that was built hundreds of years ago. She hopes to someday travel more of this world!

Being that she is half Italian, Talia's favorite food is pasta with spaghetti arrabiata as her favorite. "I know I could not live without a little spice in my life though! So to compliment most of my meals I eat a lot of peperoncini's and jalapenos!" She really doesn't have a favorite movie but her favorite TV shows are the Soprano's and the Office. "Nothing beats the mob and a good comedy!" she laughs. "My favorite quote is actually a quote from Batman Begins, but I think it rings very true to my soul. "It's not who you are on the inside, it's what you do that defines you." Playing on her team, and knowing Talia, I can see that she definitely lives this.

When asked if there are any other goals that she is pursuing, Talia ponders thoughtfully. "Where do I begin, I have so many goals that it would take pages to list them all! But right now my focus is on getting my law degree and getting into the college of my choosing. I want to practice Constitutional law and maybe someday I'll get into politics. I find the Constitution so intriguing; the ideas, risk, and time that it took the founding fathers to create this document that our country was and still is based upon. I'm a Republican and I hold a strong stance on that parties views. That doesn't mean I'm not open to new ideas or change, I just feel that the Republican Party needs to take a stand on issues they believe in like they did during the Reagan years. Ever since I was little, I have had a passion for people and politics so I feel that this is the path I should follow. But I know that I do not determine my future so if God leads me down another path, well I'm all ears!"she smiles.

When you see Tally in her new royal Blue Falcons uniform in the Open B, smiling with her zest for life with a sparkle in her eyes, please introduce yourself and say "HI" to another awesome woman, intelligent, sincere, humble, hard-working and fun-loving woman living life to its fullest in the WSC! Tally is the type of person that you are just drawn to because she is so cool and accepting of everyone. She doesn't play games. What you see is what you get. Can't wait until you are 30 so you can play on my O30 team Tally! You go GIRL!
