| Plantar Fascitis Update from our Friends at ATI, Physical Therapy |
I recently received an email from one of your members asking about some information on a condition called Plantar Fasciitis. Most people have heard of this condition, but I'm sure most, if not all, really don't know what your plantar fascia is or what it does.
Your plantar fascia is a taught, flat band of ligaments on the bottom of your foot, whose primary purpose is to provide support for the arches of your feet. When you stand, your plantar fascia stretches and holds your arch up. When moving, your ankle muscles also help to support the arch. When excessive forces are put on the fascia and muscles in the ankle, you can strain, or over-stretch, the tissue. This can cause inflammation or pain in the area of the plantar fascia.
The pain you feel when the fascia is strained usually is the most severe, or starts, at the inside and bottom of the heel and goes into the arch of the foot. Pain is usually felt when putting weight on your foot, especially when taking your initial steps in the morning, or after not moving for long periods of time. For example, when sleeping, the foot stays relatively still, which causes the fascia to tighten up. As a result, when taking the first steps out of bed, you can stretch and strain the fascia again. This continual straining of the fascia causes swelling and almost constant pain with any weight bearing.
When it comes to treating plantar fasciitis, the most important thing is to get rid of the swelling and inflammation. The best treatment is ice to the area. Also, stretching the fascia can keep it from tightening up. To ice the fascia, take a cold soda can or frozen water bottle and roll it under the area of the foot that is sore. This is a great way to give yourself some relief and stretch out the fascia. By pulling up on your toes, you can also feel the fascia stretch. This will keep it loose, but won't over strain the area. This can be especially important in the morning before you get out of bed, as that is when the fascia will be the tightest. So, refraining from activities that will re-strain the fascia, like running, the elliptical or jumping, is extremely important. If your case is severe, one option may be going to your doctor, or going to a Physical Therapist. There are certain treatments therapists may be able to perform to help decrease swelling and pain, while allowing you to continue to exercise.
In conclusion, the treatment for plantar fasciitis depends upon the severity of your injury. You will be able to tell the severity by your level of pain and activity. When in doubt, stretching and icing will, at the very least, decrease your pain and inflammation. If your pain continues or gets worse, you may want to check with your doctor and inquire about physical therapy.
Again, if you have any questions, or want to send me a question on another topic, please email me at tony.gries@atipt.com. |

North Suburban Special Olympics Looking for a Coach
Practice is 1 1/2 hours for 12 weeks (mid March to early June) with 2 tournaments locally and then the State games in Stevens Point if the team makes it. There is an initial coaching certification, one morning, and the certification lasts for 3 years. I've taken players to the Wave games for fan appreciation so they could get autographs. It's a fun group, and a nice reason to get out. It's at an indoor gym for the first part, then moves outside in April.
Please contact me if you are interested.

Soccer Burns More Fat Than Jogging |
ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2007) - A new scientific experiment shows that soccer is better for your health than jogging. Researchers believe that soccer can be used to actively fight obesity. Soccer is not just a game of fun. The research shows that a game of soccer two to three times a week is profoundly health-improving. As a matter of fact, the beneficial effects are so massive that it beats jogging.

January 27, 2009 Dear Women's Soccer Club, The Webster family would like to sincerely thank you for all your help and generosity. My brain tumor was called a Meningioma and was mostly removed on November 17th. The preliminary test result showed the tumor to be benign. Currently my condition is good and I have been very fortunate that my recovery is headed in the right direction. The doctor has said that my scar is healing nicely and the other factors are normal. Since some if the tumor is remaining, my radiation will begin shortly to treat the rest of the tumor. I really miss the club, the women and being able to enjoy the sport of soccer. Even though I am on the bench I enjoy watching the club play. Last week Thursday night I got to kick the ball and that was the best fresh start ever. Again thank you so much for all kindness and caring that you extended to my family. Truly, The Webster's Kris, Kyle and Morgan Kris Webster is on the right with her mom. |
