Playstructure for UihleinNew Policy:
Clock in Volunteer Hours or Buyout
"4 or $50"

Why?

Urgent Update from Ginny:
WSC currently has over 1700 registered members with no end in sight - which is awesome, but I need some help! We started with only 19 of my friends in Nov 1999. To keep up with the expected growth and expansion of the club and still maintain our club at the highest quality that we have come to enjoy and expect, I CANNOT keep working at the pace I currently do with minimal help anymore & asking the same wonderful volunteers each time.

As a result, there will be mandatory volunteer requirement over the course of the year or buy out by Nov 1, 2009. See breakdown below.

Each team will have a team lead for charities representative. The team's TLC rep will work with Joanna Grossi - the WSC Volunteer Communications Manager to see what needs to be done in the club so that your players hours fulfilled/ buyout. There will be many opportunities throughout the year to fill them. Another way to fill your hours is to attend a Women's Charities, Inc fundraiser for the WSC or the Women's Scholarship Fund.
When will this start?  Playstructure for UihleinEffective Jan 1, 2009

How does this work?
Buyout occurs during calendar year (Jan 1st to Nov 1st)
  • Regular rate: will be  volunteering for 4 hours over the course of one calendar year or a $50 buyout
  • Student rate: will be volunteering for 2 hours  over the course of one calendar year or a $25 buyout
  • What designates a student?
Student rate includes any student with credit hours exceeding 12 credit hours per semester
  • What designates a regular rate?
*Regular rate includes any player playing more than 2 sessions per calendar year and not a full-time student.  (Playing two sessions or less per calendar year no volunteer requirements)

*If you are on more than one team, that does not mean having to volunteer more or buyout more.  If volunteer commitment has not been fulfilled, come next immediate session, player status remains ineligible for following session of play for member.

Thank you for understanding so that we can continue to flourish as a club with minimal effort from you but HUGE for the club. Thank you in advance.

Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Joanna Grossi.

A Message From the CEO
Player Safety

It is a top priority of the WSC to try to prevent injuries the best that we can but we need your help! Please make sure that when you are on the soccer field, that you check yourself to make sure that you are in the frame of mind to play so that no one is injured. Sometimes, your momentum takes over and you can't stop and you run into someone or ram them into the boards unintentionally. It is not worth the potential injury to yourself or the other player. Remember, this is NOT the world cup and we don't receive the big bucks with every goal scored or saved. Also please remember that we are playing in a smaller confined space than outdoor and we need to be able to play under control. If you can't stop maybe you're playing out of control -especially when you get tired. Please be proactive and back off sooner before you collide.

RE: FIELD PLAY & REFEREES
Educate yourselves on the LAWS of SOCCER and know what is considered a foul, even if the refs do not call it. See Indoor rules on website in WSC handbook under Docs www.womenssoccerclub.com . It is not about playing so hard and rough until a ref calls it. The referees ref many levels of play each night. They may have just refereed a game of high school boys games and then step on the field with the WSC games. As a result, they may let more calls go than we like to see. No matter how often they are educated beforehand, come game day, it is very likely http://blog.mlive.com/kzgazette/2008/08/large_OlympicSoccer.jpgthat they may forget due to the circumstances aforementioned. The mentality that there is no foul if the ref doesn't call it does not make it okay. There is also the question of good sportsmanship in how you play in our club. Everyone, please slap hands through at the end of game line-up whether you win or lose the game. That signifies that you all understand that it is just a game and what happens on the field in the heat of competition, stays on the field. Apologize for issues that arose with no hard feelings. We need to look out for each other and take care of each other on the field. Do not retaliate if you feel that you have been wronged just get off the field and cool down.

If you have disparity with the referee, captains, please document referee issues with the facility in question. State the date, your name, team name, league and division, name of referee and issues. Submit to facility. Please state only facts.

RE: GOALKEEPERS & FIELD PLAYERS
CAPTAINS - PLEASE tell the referees BEFORE each game that we want to keep our players safe as a top priority. In the event of a 50:50 ball http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2007/09/24/PH2007092401582.jpgwith the goalkeeper, the ball is to go to the goalkeeper. If the GK has a hand on the ball which means she is in possession of the ball, players back off. It is up to the discretion of the referee to make this call so PLEASE let the referees know BEFORE the game. We do NOT want any collisions between goalkeepers & field players resulting in injuries sustained.

Here is an explanation of what players are referring to as the "Halo Rule". If the GK has control of the ball, do NOT kick the ball while it is in the GK hands. If you see the GK coming out and she is on the ground and has a hand on the ball, do not pursue the ball. BACK OFF! SAFETY COMES FIRST. 50:50 ball to the Keeper. Please ask the referees to be more vigilant to this before your games so that everyone is on the same page and there are no injuries sustained to the keepers.

It is top priority of the WSC to prevent injuries and do whatever necessary to limit the number of women hurt due to accidents over the years in the WSC.

Play safe and have fun!!

No Moss Grows Under Her Feet!
By Ginny McCullough

I was playing on the O40 Legs team as a club sub and as is usual, stayed after to share some camaraderie with friends. Stephanie Konstanz was a player on the Legs team. On the soccer field, you could see that she never does anything halfway. She is one to never let the moss grow under her feet. Her eyes shine with her zeal for life as she raced down the field carrying the ball, looking for an open player to pass to or taking the shot herself.  After the game, she and those of us who were able to stay after the games started swapping stories about the stresses that we face in our everyday lives, expressing how lucky we are to have soccer to play to help relieve that stress. Stephanie shared that she was an attorney dealing with sensitive crimes like sexual assault and child pornography. Talk about stress on the job! I wanted to know more about this amazing woman who was on the front lines fighting to keep the world safe for the rest of us. Let me share Stephanie's story with you. She is amazing!!!

Stephanie was born & raised in Madison, Wisconsin to Norma and John Hanson. Her mom is a librarian and her dad is an attorney. She has one brother, Scott - age 44; he has 2 daughters (18 yrs., Courtney & almost 2 yrs, Diana).  He is retired from the Air Force, currently acting as Mr. Mom. They grew up in Madison on the north side of town. Stephanie went to Madison East High School where she spent her leisure time hanging out on State Street & at the Union. Stephanie laughed, "We thought we were pretty cool drinking coffee at Steep & Brew and on the Union Terrace."

Stephanie continued, "Did I mention I was born with a Bucky Badger tail.  Love all things Bucky and not just because I love to wear Cardinal Red!"  Her parents met at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as undergrads. Her dad went to law school there and her mom received her master's degree there.  Stephanie also graduated from Madison with undergraduate degrees in Political Science & International Relations, French Area Studies (1990).  She graduated from the UW law school (1995).  She proudly stated, "Both my dad and I were members of the UW Crew team.  HUGE Badger fan -bibs, cowboy hat and all!  Also, a Cub fan (my Grandma loved the Cubbies).  Not a Bear fan."Stephaine Konstanz -Badgers

Stephanie currently works for the State of Wisconsin, and has been an Assistant District Attorney in Washington County since late Aug. 1999 at the West Bend courthouse. AS mentioned above, Stephanie is an Assistant District Attorney, a prosecutor, with her current focus being sensitive crimes such as sexual assaults, child porn, etc.  Prior to this she was a Law Clerk, working for circuit court judges, an appellate court judge and a WI Supreme Court justice. She smiled and said, "Does one ever really use their college major? Neither undergrad nor law school really prepare you to be a trial attorney."

You asked for it!!!
Per many member's request, we will be adding a Professional Network Directory [PND] to our new secure homepage "coming soon" for WSC members only.
  • SAFE INFO!  It will be password protected!

Months ago we asked you to update your contact information on Member Manager to help streamline information, getting ready to solely use on-line registration.  We are now ready for phase #2!  Your information is currently housed in a separate SECURE site until we merge the two sites together to make one secure database through WSC powered by Women's Charities, Inc..  Women's Charities, Inc. is our parent organization.  Under WCI's leadership, we are no longer just a soccer league stuck together for the sole purpose of playing soccer and then we go home.  We are a community of women who come together to play soccer AND in return, take back so much more.  We can make a HUGE difference in each other's lives...finding strength through numbers.

Please fill in:

  •  occupation/job title http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:Ffc-HZ_bkPklyM:http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/img/assets/3839/phone_directory.jpg
  • employer
  • contact information
  • a box to indicate  if you want to be included in the on-line PND on the WSC website
We will also be using the database to find out professionally, who does what in the club.  If we are in need of your expertise/skill/talent, and you want to help, we may ask if we can pick your brain.  We have diverse skills and talents in our club!  Who knew the women we see weekly have lives outside of soccer!  What a great networking tool...support our own women!

We are ready to start populating occupations and employers.  The sooner we get the information, the sooner we can get it to you!  It only takes a minute to update.  Thank you in advance for doing this, and for being time-sensitive.
