What Do We Know, Really?
"Education consists mainly in what we have unlearned."
- Mark Twain
"Whatever authority I may have rests solely on knowing how little I know."
- Socrates
"It takes seven years to get over the stink of enlightenment."
- Unknown sage
It appears to me that lately, in public conversations and forums, a lot of people are really sure they know what's right for everybody else. Maybe I've just started paying more attention to what has always been the case. Or, maybe it's been more obvious to me because of the hubris with which people have been talking at (not with; at) each other. This has certainly been noticeable in political debates about the economy and upcoming elections. I've also seen it in virtual discussions on Facebook and Twitter on topics ranging from religion to literature to cuisine. At the risk of providing yet another example of the very practice I mean to critique, let me say this: "We need to get a collective grip!"

A Reflection from Clergy Intern DeWayne Davis
| | When Your Attention is All You Can Give "We forget that all we do is plant the seed . . . we are not expected to control or produce the harvest. We merely plant the seed . . . and trust." --Closing Reflection, Global Awareness Through Experience, Guatemala Upon arriving in Guatemala City, I breathed a sigh of relief. It looked like any other urban center, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad being in a foreign country for a little while. While I did not know what to expect, my American provincialism left me sufficiently guarded such that I was both reticent to explore Guatemalan culture and reluctant to be in relationship with new people. Without knowing it, I was trying to close myself off to an experience, probably as a means of self-protection. I would soon come to realize that what I would see, hear, and experience would not allow me to stay guarded. My only task was to pay attention, and the rest would take care of itself. MCC NOVA SPIRITUAL RETREAT
October 21-23, 2011
Sevenoaks Pathworks Center, Madison, VA
Valuable relationships are essential to a rich, fulfilled, purposeful life; and they never happen by accident. Our relationships - with God, ourselves, friends, family members, neighbors, co-workers, and our intimate loves - need to be nurtured. And there is no time like the present to enhance our nurturing skills.
We'll gather once again at the beautiful Sevenoaks Retreat Center, nestled in the hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison, VA (Approximately 2 hours from MCC NOVA). Sevenoaks offers comfortable meeting, worship, and lodging accommodations; an array of excellent meals; hiking trails, including a rolling river; and stunning natural views to stir your spirit.
The format for this year's retreat will differ from previous years. The schedule will still include time for personal reflection, small and large group discussions, worship, play time, and free time to spend as you desire. However, this year you will be able to personalize your retreat experience by choosing from a selection of focused workshop sessions. Each session will include prayer, presentation, reflection, discussion, and practical take-away tools. In addition, we'll hold our very own Variety Showon Saturday evening!! Registration cost is $200 per person (includes 2 nights lodging and 5 excellent meals)
Registration deadline is September 18
For complete information on this year's Retreat format and activities-including a list of workshop options-please CLICK HERE to download a flyer and registration form or visit the Retreat website to register online using your credit card (via Paypal).

WATER AND SPIRITUALITY

Since January, MCC NOVA has been engaged in studying and supporting fair and environmentally responsible access to clean water. (Think Accotink Creek cleanup, water treatment plant field trip, raising funds for an international water project, and transitioning from bottled to filtered tap water at church). It is reasonable and rewarding to ask, what is the spiritual connection in all this? Why does it matter, deep down? As you think about the answer, consider Mary Oliver's prompt in this poem from her book Evidence.
Water
What is the vitality and necessity
of clean water?
Ask the man who is ill, who is lifting
his lips to the cup.
More activities will take place in the months ahead.

| | THE DYNAMICS of SIZE at MCC NOVA Saturday, September 24, 10 am - 4 pm Late last year, several leaders of MCC NOVA attended the MCC Size Summit in DC. Rev. Elders Lillie Brock, Ken Martin, and Darlene Garner led an excellent presentation about how the dynamics of church size (i.e. average weekly attendance) has an impact of nearly every aspect of church life and growth. They also conducted a specific assessment of our congregation, based on survey results, interviews with leaders, and a review of our bylaws and procedures. Rev. Elder Lillie Brock led our assessment and provided numerous insightful comments about our unique challenges and opportunities as a congregation. We were so impressed, we wanted everyone at MCC NOVA to have a chance to learn more.
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, September 24 for a "Mini-Size Summit," as Rev. Elder Lillie Brock explores the dynamics of church specifically for MCC NOVA helps us address the opportunities and challenges unique to our congregation.
Additional details to follow. |

MCC NOVA OFFERS SPACE to ST. ANTHONY'S of PADUA
Beginning August 21, MCC NOVA will be providing space for a new emerging church, St. Anthony's of Padua, an inclusive parish of the American National Catholic Church celebrating mass on Sunday evenings at 5 pm. St. Anthony's will be renting our first floor, inclusive of the sanctuary and fellowship areas from 4 - 7 pm on Sundays. We also anticipate working together with their community on some joint projects. MCC NOVA also provides space to a Jewish Kabbalah Study group one Saturday per month, and many other groups who rent space on an occasional basis. We are happy to be able to have our physical resource utilized by these interfaith and community partners. As always, please check the church calendar on our website and contact the church office when scheduling meetings. This will allow us to best respect both internal and external groups as we share space. If you have any questions, please contact the Church Office.
SERVICE PROJECT: HELP! CARE! MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

We have an opportunity to make a big difference in the life of one of our members who's in need of a little help. Can you paint? Clean? Pack boxes? Do yard work? If so, would you be willing to take a road trip and serve on a work crew? We're trying to form a team to travel to West Virginia over a long weekend to help Frank repair and repaint his family's home. Both of Frank's parents died in the past year, and in the midst of his own grief, he has the huge task of dealing with their estate. MCC NOVA has organized groups and traveled many miles to help people we don't know; this service project gives us an opportunity to help someone we do know.
UPDATE! The tentative date is the weekend of September 3-4. Plans are currently to travel on Thursday, work all day Friday and Saturday, and return Sunday. These plans may change as we engage in conversations with all participants. There may also be some overlap and "shifts" as some people come to assist on the days that work for them. If you are able to participate at any time during the weekend, please contact the church office at info@mccnova.com. Thank you so much for considering this opportunity, and for your generosity with your time and resources. NOMINATING PROCESS FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS This year's Congregational Meeting may seem a long way off, but there is a new process for nominating Board members (per the bylaw change passed by the congregation last December) so we need to start preparing early. In order to identify the most qualified candidates willing to serve, a Nominating Committee has been appointed, consisting of Lou Brown, Jane Bennett, and Karen Dickman. The Nominating Committee will identify and solicit active Members of the Church possessing the necessary skill sets and experience to stand for election to expiring or vacant positions on the Board of Directors. If you believe you possess any of the skills list below and are interested in a position on the Board please submit a letter of intent to the Church Office, or any member of the Nominating Committee by Sunday, August 28, 2011. It would be helpful if you also included a resume. We may also approach some people to recruit their applications if they are recommended to us or are known to have a specific skill set needed by the Board at this time. We will screen the applications, interview the most promising selections, then present a slate of candidates for nomination.. The nominating committee will only put forward the number of candidates needed to fill the expected number of vacancies and will notify any candidates that were not selected that they will not be nominated. Board candidates might possess one or any combination of the following skills/experience: - Policy development and implementation
- Strategic financial management and planning
- Strategic planning and decision making
- Human resource management
- Information/multimedia technology
- Facilities planning
- Board experience
- Fund raising experience
Please consider your decision to apply thoughtfully and prayerfully. The Nominating Committee will do its job in the same spirit. REFERRAL SOUGHT As part of our on-going Building/Capital Campaign process, MCC NOVA is seeking contact information for experienced Commercial Real Estate attorneys. If know someone practicing in Virginia, please contact Ginny Reed at vhreed@msn.com. MENTORING OPPORTUNITY Adolescent and Family Growth Center seeks caring adults who are willing to make a difference in a foster teen's life. We are looking for trusted adults who are able to commit to a minimum of one year to provide fun activities and enrich the life of a foster teen. Foster teens often do not have a trusted person, outside of the treatment team, who is invested in making their lives more positive. The goal of the mentoring program is to enhance the teen's life through the mentoring relationship by providing consistency and developing trust between the mentor and mentee. Here are questions to ask yourself as you consider becoming a mentor: * Are you a good listener? * Do you like working with teenagers/young adults? * Are you dependable? * Are you willing to commit yourself to a long-term relationship? * Are you able to attend trainings? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be a good candidate to become a mentor. For more information about the program, contact Maleka Walters at 703-425-9200 or mwalters@afgcinc.com. Pastor's Note: Maleka and I met to discuss AFGC and their need for mentors. She is fully aware of the mission and ministry of MCC NOVA, including our affirmative outreach to the LGBTQIA community. In fact, there may be some ways that youth who are struggling around issues of identity might benefit especially from a mentor relationship with an open-minded, secure adult who might serve as a role model. Matches are made very carefully between mentors and mentees based on a number of things, including proximity, scheduling, particular gifts, and the needs of the youth. If you think you might be interested in positively impacting the life of a young person, please contact Maleka to find out more information. This is a wonderful way to live out our own mission of Spirit, Community, and Action - Inside & "Out"!
SUMMER BOOK GROUP OPPORTUNITY Wednesdays, July 23 - Sept 7, 7:30-9:00 pm via conference call MCC NOVA has been invited to participate in an exciting book study to be led by Rev. Tom Bohache of MCC Christ the Liberator in New Jersey. The group will be reading and discussing the new book Radical Love: An Introduction to Queer Theology by Patrick S. Radical Love was just published this year by Seabury Press and is available from Amazon.com in print form ($13.60 plus shipping) or as an e-book on Kindle ($9.99). NEWS & NOTES from the CONGREGATIONAL CARE TEAM
Several months ago, the Congregational Care Team announced our plans to include our entire congregation in our efforts to create a caring community here at MCC NOVA. This included a survey so that you can tell us what types of activities you might be willing to help with (e.g. sending cards, calling those in need, making meals, etc.). Thanks to those of you who already completed that survey. For those who may not have had a chance, it's not too late. Please follow this link. It should take fewer than 10 minutes.
Remember that we always have a box of cards on the prayer table as you enter the sanctuary. We encourage you to make it a regular discipline to take a card or two whenever you are here for worship or other events, think about someone in the community you may not have seen for a while or whom you know is experiencing a difficult time, write them a brief note to let them know they are in your thoughts, and then simply put their name on the envelope. We will do the rest to address and mail the card. You can place the cards in the offering plates or deliver them to the church office.
As we head into summer, with all of its associated vacations, it's even more difficult than usual to maintain our connections with members of our community. We want to be intentional about nurturing the bonds we share and reaching out especially to those in need. Speaking of which, if you have a special need for care or prayer, please let us know. The best way to do so is to email or phone the church office at info@mccnova.com or 703-691-0930. |
| Special Thanks... | |
To TransFormations for their leadership of worship last week, for their ongoing support of our Second Friday peer-led support group, and all the other gifts they give our community.
To Carol, Elethia, Ginny, Gail, and Kala for their willingness to help care for one of our members in need. Thanks to all of you for your small acts of kindness and compassion; they make a huge difference!
