BACK TO SCHOOL "Adopt a Child" PROGRAM August 9-23 On Sunday, August 9th, NoVA's Micah Action "out" will kick off this year's school supply drive. We will work with Our Daily Bread's 2009 Back to School Program to help ensure that needy kids right here in Fairfax County have the supplies they need to get the new school year off to a great start. Social workers have already identified 220 kids who qualify for assistance this year. There are two ways that you/we can help. 1) "Adopt a Child" offers a donor the chance to "adopt" a child or a family of children to provide school supplies for the upcoming academic year. By "adopting" a child, you have the opportunity to provide their required supplies, and also perhaps to purchase a new backpack, jacket, or pair of shoes. We all remember that special feeling of starting off the school year with something new! Applications to adopt a child are on the community bulletin board in the narthex. Once received you will be provided with a specific list of items that the child(ren) needs. 2) Make a cash donation payable to NoVA, that will be forwarded at the end of our drive (Sunday, Aug. 23rd) to Our Daily Bread, which will use the funds to purchase $40 gift cards for each child who is not "adopted" to accomplish the same goal of providing them the required supplies they will need for the upcoming year. You also have the option of purchasing gift cards yourself at stores where the needed supplies can be found, i.e. Wal-mart, Office Depot, Target, etc. Please note that Our Daily Bread DOES NOT have the capacity to accept or distribute school supplies. A donation receipt for the 2009 Back to School program is available on the Our Daily Bread website at: http://www.our-daily-bread.org/documents/2009BTSDonorReceipt.pdf We are also looking for someone who is willing to chair this Back to School Program effort this year. If you have an interest, please contact Rev. Tim at 703-691-0930 or at timgagar@yahoo.com Thank you in advance for your participation in this important partnership program with Our Daily Bread
CARE TEAM MEETINGTuesday, August 11, 7:00 pm The monthly meeting of NoVA's Congregational Care Team will be held in the library (2nd Floor) at church beginning at 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in responding to a wide variety of needs for members of friends of MCC NoVA, this may be a great place for you to plug-in and get involved. This month the agenda includes 1) finalizing plans for the Sept. 13 Homecoming Sunday working in conjunction with MCC NoVA's Worship Planning Team. 2) Planning a rite of farewell for those members of our congregation who will be moving away...there are several this fall. 3) Finalize a training schedule for the fall months (Sept thru Dec). CALLING ALL WORSHIP PARTICIPANTS... (Past, Present and Future...)
MCC NOVA Worship Participant Training
Sunday, August 30th following worship
Metropolitan Community Churches and MCC NOVA believes that we as a community are a Priesthood of All Believers, meaning that we hold as a core value the honoring of the ministry of the laity, who are included in the full liturgical and sacramental leadership of worship. As such, there are many opportunities for you to participate in the leading of Sunday worship, through readings, prayers, and serving and assisting in communion.
We encourage all present worship participants/leaders as well as all those interested in becoming involved with worship leadership to join us after worship on Sunday, August 30th. This will be a time to learn new skills, review procedures and logistics and share ideas in order to improve and enhance everyone's worship experience. If you were wondering how to get more involved in worship - join us on the 30th - we would love to see you there! Please contact Stephanie Burns with any questions.
SAVE THE DATE! WELCOME HOME: Homecoming Sunday
September 13
Sunday, September 13 we will celebrate Homecoming Sunday in an effort to welcome people back home from summer vacation and invite new folks to consider making MCC NOVA their home. We'll be reflecting about what it means to create a family of choice and build a spiritual home that welcomes and celebrates us as we are. We will be receiving new members, and hosting a community potluck lunch following worship. This is the perfect time to invite a friend to worship with you!
HAVE WE GOT A DEAL FOR YOU!
The Pet Ministry has collected some wonderful donations of pet paraphernalia, all in excellent clean condition, some items have never been used! We want to make life easier for our MCC pets by circulating these items to those who could really use them rather than make new purchases. Click here to see what has been collected. Contact De Raynes at deraynes@aol.com or Deb Ronemus to facilitate an exchange at church. If YOU have something you would like to put on our Pets Trading Post, let us know. It must be in good to excellent condition and very clean.
