Grateful for Signs of Life

At the time of this writing, I'm still reveling in the experience of Easter and the power of resurrection.  We took a leap of faith this year and tried something we haven't tried before (always a risky endeavor).  We rented an elementary school cafeteria so that we could hold our Easter worship service off-site in order to (a) accommodate more people than will fit in our current sanctuary and (b) have an experience of worshipping "out of the box" that might inform our continued efforts to creatively envision our next stages of physical growth.  I can pretty much sum up my thoughts about this experience in one word:  Wow.

MCC NOVA TRANSGENDER MINISTRY KICK-OFF!
Sunday, May 3, following worship

As a follow-up to NOVA's Ministry Leadership Team meeting focused on "action" held in March, one of the four focus areas was to develop a Ministry and Outreach with the Transgender Community. To kick-off this ministry area, Micah will present a panel on Sunday afternoon, May 3rd following worship. "The Transgender Journey - Our Stories, Our Lives" will include several members of the MCC NoVA community who will share their stories as Transgender individuals. The panel will be facilitated by an out-of-town guest from MCC San Francisco, who will be with us on that day. The presentation will be preceded by a potluck luncheon and will conclude with a Question & Answer session with the panelists.

GRIEF/LOSS PEER SUPPORT

Grieving the loss of a loved one is an individual process. Everyone's grief is different. Grieving is especially difficult in the first year. However, we face the grief at different times all throughout our lives, months/years later. If you have a need to talk to someone in a healthy, safe, confidential space, please contact Jean Taczak at jtaczak@att.net or
703-262-0126 home or 571-228-3536 cell or talk with Reverend Tim or Reverend
Kharma.  Jean will meet with you individually at an agreed upon place.

MCC NOVA COMBATS POVERTY
Breakfast Delivery, Walkathon, Meals on Wheels, Hypothermia Shelters
________________________________

Early one Sunday morning, we served breakfast to a young immigrant who had found herself suddenly homeless after separating from her husband. She knew MCC NOVA. Emma had just written her a check for food and she was very grateful. Your generous weekly donations aid people in crisis like this young woman.

MCC NOVA helps in other ways:
  • The first Sunday of each month, MCC NOVA delivers breakfast to Fairfax homeless. Typically, we prepare the food on Saturday afternoon. If you have an hour or two to spare, you can help.
  • Meals on Wheels helps the elderly and the disabled remain at home while they recover from surgery or short-term medical problems and helps those with long-term chronic illnesses avoid or delay institutionalization. Drivers are needed mid-day on weekdays. The time commitment is up to you.
  • In the winter, local churches take turns hosting the homeless to prevent hypothermia. While MCC NOVA is not equipped to host these individuals, we have sent volunteers to assist the other churches.

If you are interested in any of these programs, please contact Pat Monahan at (703) 684-7947 or pmmonahan@cox.net.

COMMUNITY NOTES

HELPING OTHERS HELP OTHERS...

You have the opportunity to support members and friends of the church as they help others...

Alicia Cole is participating in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk

Please help...I'm taking an amazing journey and I'd like you to support me. Thousands of women and men are going to walk 60 miles over the course of three days to raise money for breast cancer research and community outreach through Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.

I've joined Fearless Ladies of Freedom in support of Mary Ethel. Together, my team is planning on raising at least $3000 to help end breast cancer forever. Personally, I am going to raise $2500 of that, so I need your help.

Please follow this link below to visit my personal fundraising webpage and make a donation. If you donate online, you can spread your donation out over four monthly payments.

Thank you for your support and concern and thank you for your support for my continuing journey. Love ya, Alicia

Robert Blickenstaff is riding in "Ride for the Feast," a two-day bike ride in support of "A Moveable Feast" ...

On September 13th , 2008 I lost my friend Francsico Roda  from cancer.  He is sorely missed... kindly spoken of... and forever in my thoughts.

As things happen in life, God brought the opportunity to ride a bike in a fundraiser called
"Ride for the Feast".  It's a two day, one hundred and forty mile event (bike ride).  The funds they raise provide meals and rides to doctors for those affected by cancer and HIV.   I truly believe Francisco would be proud to sponsor such an event.  I know he'd be proud of me!

So, I'm asking for your help by sponsorship and helping me to raise over $1,200.  The proceeds go to help provide meals for many people suffering with HIV and cancer.  All of them are low income individuals/families, with many of them surviving on less than $500 per month.  The "Moveable Feast" helps provide them three nutrious meals per day and many cases emotional support where there is none.

You can do so by following this link https: (www.kintera.org) and making a donation to Bobby Blickenstaff.  All donations are tax deductible.  For information about the organization go to www.mfeast.org.  My team name is Dragonfly. Sponsor me as: Bobby Blickenstaff.  If you have any questions, please email me at:   rblick1634@hotmail.com.  Thank you.

Especially During Tough Economic Times...
2-1-1 CONNECTS THOSE IN NEED TO HELP IN THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA REGION

It seems no one in Northern Virginia is free from the impacts of the economic downturn, the credit crisis, home foreclosures and layoffs.  Faced with those disasters, more people than ever are seeking information about health and human services and other assistance programs, but don't know where to call.  Now, there is one convenient number which is answered seven days a week, around the clock:  2-1-1.  The call is free and confidential and operates throughout Northern Virginia and all other parts of the state 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Callers to 2-1-1 may request referrals to services for abuse and neglect, HIV/AIDS, disabilities, domestic violence, health care, housing, mental health, senior citizens, and shelters, among others.  For more information about CrisisLink and
2-1-1, check out crisislink.org or contact Carol Loftur-Thun at 703.527.6603.
