MCC NoVA Begins Exploration of Youth/Young Adult Ministry
MCC NOVA has been exploring the possibility of starting a youth/young adult ministry/outreach. We have 7 teenagers in our community now and a good number of young adults in their early 20's. A number of adults have stepped forward who have indicated an interest in exploring this area of ministry and I am actively working with several others to explore what this might look like. "And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman"

GRIEF/LOSS PEER SUPPORT
Grieving the loss of a loved one is an individual process. Everyone's grief is different. Grieving is especially difficult in the first year. However, we face the grief at different times all throughout our lives, months/years later. If you have a need to talk to someone in a healthy, safe, confidential space, please contact Jean Taczak at jtaczak@att.net or 703-262-0126 home or 571-228-3536 cell or talk with Reverend Tim or Reverend Kharma. Jean will meet with you individually at an agreed upon place.
HYPOTHERMIA PREVENTION PROGRAM FAIRFAX AREA CHRISTIAN EMERGENCY TRANSITION SERVICES (FACETS)
Area churches, this winter, will house Fairfax homeless people to prevent them from freezing to death. Churches provide meals and beds for their guests.
Although MCC NOVA cannot share our facility to host homeless guests, we will provide volunteers to another church for 2 weeks: March 1 to March 7. Volunteers may prepare, deliver, and/or serve meals to the guests. We also spend time playing games and chatting with the guests. How you serve is up to you. If you have an hour to spare, during either week, we'll find a spot for you! Please contact Pat Monahan at <pmmonahan@cox.net> or at (703) 684-7947 if you are available.
A NOTE FROM THE HOSPITALITY TEAM
The Hospitality Team is looking for friendly and cheerful folks with a welcoming spirit. Think about how you feel when you walk through the doors and someone says "Good morning - welcome - how are you?" Do you enjoy the "goodies" to snack on each Sunday? Do you feel welcomed again as you receive a bulletin from one of the ushers and another "Good Morning" followed by a hug or handshake? If these things apply - how would you like to pass along this good will to others? We need people to greet, bring in the snacks and to usher. The most urgent need is to build up the usher teams. There are 4 teams with each team having a team leader. The teams rotate - each team ushering for a month at a time - 3 times a year. For starters you would hand out the bulletins, take up the collection, and then bring up the elements to the altar. Then as your comfort level increases you may be called upon to call the rows or direct people to the acolytes and servers during communion. As time goes on, your team leader will show you some of the other behind-the-scenes duties that the ushers perform. There is a sign-up sheet in the sacristy if you wish to help with greeting or bringing in things for the table. If you would also be interested in joining one of the usher teams, or would want more information on any of these ministries please contact Yvonne Hansche at yhansche@aol.com, HM 703 791-5864, or WK 703 695-2039. |

MCC NOVA YOUTH/YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY PLANNING MEETING
Saturday, February 28, Time and Location TBA
Join us for our first get-together with the youth and young adults of MCC NOVA to brainstorm about what they might like to see if we were to develop a ministry focused on their age group. Over pizza and soda, we will discuss what ideas the youth and young adults here at MCC NOVA may have that will help us continue to develop such a specialized outreach. Please assist us in ensuring that everyone who is interested and falls in this age group is able to come. We will try and pick a location that is central and will be easy for everyone to get to. We will also provide rides for those otherwise unable to attend. See Rev. Tim for more information.
FEED THE HOMELESS TEAM HOSTS TIGER WOODS GOLF WARM-UP
Saturday, March 7, 7:00 pm MCC NOVA's Feed the Homeless Team, part of our Micah Ministry, is hosting a "get over the winter blues" golf outing/fundraiser on Saturday March 7 from 7:00 to 9:30 pm at the Top Golf`Center in Alexandria. MCC NOVA COMBATS POVERTY
Breakfast Delivery, Walkathon, Meals on Wheels, Hypothermia Shelters ________________________________ Early one Sunday morning, we served breakfast to a young immigrant who had found herself suddenly homeless after separating from her husband. She knew MCC NOVA. Emma had just written her a check for food and she was very grateful. Your generous weekly donations aid people in crisis like this young woman. MCC NOVA helps in other ways:
-
The first Sunday of each month, MCC NOVA delivers breakfast to Fairfax homeless. Typically, we prepare the food on Saturday afternoon. If you have an hour or two to spare, you can help.
-
Meals on Wheels helps the elderly and the disabled remain at home while they recover from surgery or short-term medical problems and helps those with long-term chronic illnesses avoid or delay institutionalization. Drivers are needed mid-day on weekdays. The time commitment is up to you.
-
In the winter, local churches take turns hosting the homeless to prevent hypothermia. While MCC NOVA is not equipped to host these individuals, we have sent volunteers to assist the other churches. If you are interested in any of these programs, please contact Pat Monahan at (703) 684-7947 or pmmonahan@cox.net.
