| SABBATICAL NEWS |
|
As we near the half-way point of the Sabbatical journey that both Rev. Kharma and we as a congregation have embarked on, the Sabbatical Committee would like to thank each and everyone one of you for your presence, support and ongoing enthusiasm. We have been blessed with continued excellence in worship each Sunday, including great music, and amazing preaching from both laity and clergy, in-house and out. Our ministry activities continue unabated and in abundance. In short, we have much to be thankful for, and proud of, as well.
And we have much to look forward to. This Fall is chock full of opportunities and activities. This Sunday, we welcome our "Bishop," the Rev. Elder Arlene Ackerman as our guest speaker, and on subsequent Sundays, more from other guests, some familiar and some new. Our World Religions class begins September 9, and there are a number of other learning and discussion opportunities being planned. Washington AIDSWalk, MCC's 40th Anniversary Celebration, and our annual Ministry Fair will all take place the first weekend in October. If you'd like a chance to meet with others from our own MCC Region 3, there are sub-regional gatherings planned throughout the Fall in a variety of locations. Our on-going ministries will continue full-steam ahead and we will also have the opportunity to begin new conversations around the future of our website and as promised, the future of our physical facility. All this and more, as we prepare to welcome Rev. Kharma home from Sabbatical on November 2.
Once again, thanks to all of you for your presence and support. Because of you, MCC NOVA continues to thrive in 'Spirit, Community, Action -- Inside & Out.' |
| AND THE SURVEY SAYS! |
|
The results of the Worship and Spiritual Development Survey are in! A huge "thank you" to everyone who participated in the survey - we received some very thoughtful comments as well as the specific feedback we requested. The survey responses have been collected and reviewed, and a summary of those findings is presented here. The detailed results - including all comments and suggestions - are being provided to the Ministry Leaders for each area for further focus and action.

Human beings everywhere hunger for that which provides meaning and for a connection with something greater than our individual selves. We can learn much from other religions that can enrich our own spirituality and practice or can teach us understanding and acceptance of other traditions.
We will explore some of the great religious traditions of the world for seven weeks on Tuesday evenings from September 9 through October 21 at 7:00 p.m. at MCC NOVA. Virginia Miles will lead the series. She is a Wesley Theological Seminary graduate and a former pastor of the Open Door MCC.

MCC NOVA presents a sacred/community drumming circle. All are welcome. No experience is required. Circles are scheduled quarterly around the time of the solstice. Drumming has been used by indigenous people all over the world for thousands of years as a powerful spiritual tool. In recent years, thousands of Community Drumming Circles have come into an existence as a way for people in our time to capture some of the concepts and practices of the ancient tradition and experience the benefits of it. These circles typically borrow some of the concepts and traditions of the ancient traditions, but are more flexible and require no special training or talents to participate. Our circle is based on this concept. Everyone is welcome. The more the merrier.
PLUG IN! MEMBERSHIP/INQUIRER'S CLASS Sunday, September 21, following service
Have you noticed? MCC NOVA is a vibrant place. It has an energy that, once experienced, makes people want to return. All are welcome at NOVA, even if only as observers around the edges. But the very best way to experience NOVA's energy is plug into it -- and the best way to plug in is membership. NOVA believes in "every member ministry." That is the belief that every single person has gifts to offer and is encouraged to offer them. When you're greeted at the door, handed a bulletin, guided from your seat to the communion line, those are ministries in action. When you enjoy music during the service, the readings, a prayer during communion, those are also ministries at work. There are "invisible" ministries, too: teams of people work on the administrative, communication, and congregational care needs of NOVA. A group is planning a visit to Costa Rica to put social action to work. New teams form as new ideas pop up. The joyfulness many feel at NOVA is literally the energy of people who feel connected to their church and its work. Membership, besides bringing a vote at congregational meetings, is for many, a statement of alignment with NOVA's community and work. The decision to become a member says, "This is the energy I want to plug into." Are you considering membership? Or would you simply enjoy a chance to learn more about the church, its history, its denomination --- and be served lunch at the same time? After worship on September 21st, we'll gather for an "Inquirer's / Membership Class." Open to everyone, it's a time for questions, discussion, and learning what makes MCC NOVA the special place it is. Whether you've been around NOVA a short while or a long one, you are welcome! A sign up sheet is located near the front door. See you there! Jean Gralley, Lay Delegate.
