GRIFFIN reenact
John Griffin, Groveland's vice mayor and one of the area's foremost historians, participates annually in the Dade Battlefield re-enactment, which will be held on Jan. 2. This year's battle marks the 175th anniversary of the battle, which started the 2nd Seminole War.
The battle started on December 28,1835, when 107 soldiers, led by Maj. Francis Dade, were ambushed by 180 Seminole warriors in Sumter County.Only three soldiers survived.

Seminole warriors included Halpatter Tustenuggee (Alligator), Jumper and Micanopy.

John Griffin is in demand as a speaker on Florida's Seminole, Black Seminole and African-American history.

About 40 members of the Lake County Historical Society came to the Lake David Center in October to enjoy a lunch, tour of the Groveland Historical Museum and a walking tour around the new Gray Middle School campus.

The event earned rave reviews from members, such as current president Jamie Hanja and past president Bob Grenier pictured below.
