AT JUNE 13 RECEPTION

The 1954 photo on the orange crate shows more than 100 women who worked at the B and W Canning Co. >>CLICK HERE.if you can help us identify them. The Groveland Historical Society is hosting a reception to honor WOMEN IN CITRUS. We're issuing an open invitation to any woman who worked in the citrus industry, including those who picked oranges, worked in the processing plants or served as administrators and owners.
The reception will be held on Saturday, JUNE 13, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the museum. The reception will include refreshments and a small thank you gift for the women. We encourage family members to represent any woman, living or deceased, who is unable to attend. The event is free and open to the public. To find out more details or RSVP for the event, >> CLICK HERE.

In conjunction with the event, the museum is trying to identify the 100 plus B and W workers in this 1954 photo. If you knew someone who worked at the company then >> CLICK HERE to see an enlarged copy of the photo with a form for identification. THANKS!! |

More than 100 GHS Alumni attended this year's reunion, where the Class of 1959 was honored. You can get a CD or DVD with photos from the event. The CD (left) can be converted into prints. The DVD is a slide show of the photos that display like a movie with the music "Lost in the '50s" and "Unforgettable." Both contain 120 photos. The cost is $10 if picked up at the museum; $12 if mailed.
The Black Seminole history presentation by John and Matthew Griffin drew rave comments from the crowd that came from around the county. Vice Mayor John Griffin and his grandnephew Matthew shared history and several tables of artifacts. Matthew, a senior at South Lake High and the 2008 Lake County Historical Student of the Year, plans to major in agribusiness and anthropology in college.
Thanks to photographer Bonnie Gearhart, John Griffin and Matthew Griffin. |
American Legion Donates Flag
|
Five veterans from the Groveland-Mascotte American Legion Post 239 donated a new flag to the museum. The veterans' service included WWII and the Korean War. Among the veterans was a tank commander who fought at the Battle of the Bulge and served under Gen. George Patton.
Post 239 is inviting the public to old-fashioned family games on May 17, Armed Forces Day at the legion hall located at 307 American Legion Road between Groveland and Mascotte. |
