DAVIS ELEMENTARY BULLDOZED
TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW CAMPUS

DAVIS DOZED

The former Davis Elementary campus, looking west.

In February, bulldozers cleared all but the main office section of the former Davis Elementary School. Hundreds of lifelong friendships started in the classrooms and breezeways of the school named after A.M. Davis, a former school board chairman and mayor.
The school gave many students their first band and choral lessons. The library created a love for books. Remember the blue-covered biographies? Recess? Sharing a tube of 6-12 to keep away the gnats?
The school may be gone, but the memories will last forever.

New Exhibit - Clayton Weir Woodcarvings

Former Groveland Mayor and prominent attorney Clayton Weir loved to carve wood as a way to relax in the evenings while his family watched television. Now his family is sharing some of Weir's extraordinary carvings at the Groveland Historical Museum.
Weir worked at the Arnold sawmill before becoming a lawyer. In the early 1940s, he served as mayor.
His granddaughters, Carol Willard Clark and Kristie Willard Ponsell, say they have fond memories of watching their grandfather trace designs onto the wood and then carefully carve the features with a knife or Exacto blade.
Weir is pictured in the above photo between former Governor Farris Bryant (left) and Governor Claude Kirk.
The Groveland Historical Museum is open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and by special arrangements.

Giving Tree to Honor Donors
The Groveland Historical Museum couldn't exist without our wonderful donors. We've been planning for more than a year for a special way to acknowledge these generous folks. Groveland artist Jason Brown, son of Wanda Toth Brown and Tommy Brown, recently completed painting an orange tree at the entrance to the museum. Laminated oranges with each donors' names -- or the names of loved ones, businesses or other organizations being honored -- will be attached to the tree in the coming weeks.
THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE DONATED.
You can donate online at the museum's Web site or you can mail donations to:
Groveland Historical Society, P.O. Box 761, Groveland, FL 34736.
Suggested donations:
$25 = single
$50 = family
$100 = business
