fresh
cherries,

peaches

&

blueberries

abound!

this week i took the opportunity to skip out of the store for a little blueberry picking, a tradition for me to undertake at least once a summer.

a drive to Krupkas in Fennville proved fruitful, with peaches and blueberries in full force on the drive home.

  •

i haven't done much besides simply eat those that i brought home

but one of the Art of the Table crew did! (see below!)

...and if you're inspired to eat treats  of the blue, cherry or peach kind, here are some options for consuming Michigan fruits year round!

fresh blueberry pie anyone?

Adapted from our favorite new pie cookbook, aptly named "Pie", the Blueberry-Sour Cream Pie is killer.

We knew that the book contains 300 "tried & true" recipes by renowned cookbook author, Ken Haedrich.  Yes, he says he tried them all - more than once!  And we believe him now because Allison walked into her shift today with a pie!

It took all we had to not leave the customers for a chance to taste!  When we got a chance, which someone obviously did by the time I took this picture, we were stunned at how beautifully white and densely creamy the top was all while finding out the pie below was a beautiful thick rendition of blueberry pie!  Author Ken compares it to an 'upside-down blueberry cheesecake, and that's just about right!

The way we adapted it is that instead of a store bought crust, we used Effies crackers in the crust, Beanilla Vanilla Extract, Smithfield Cream Cheese and instead of frozen blueberries she used all fresh farmers' market berries!

Not a confident pie maker?  You need this book, he tells you what equipment to use and why and how to follow certain techniques and great recipes - most of which look simple!  So

for this or 299 other great pie recipes, try the pie book  book.

Other great blueberry items in the store

Blueberry Haven is a local company in Grand Haven, MI that supplies us with delicious Michigan blueberry products.  From dried blues to chocolate covered blues, jam & baking mixes there's no other company making this great product for gift giving (and of course for eating at your house too!)

Tiffany, the creator of Blueberry Haven, dreamed of a well made blueberry product that would help us all show off the bounties of our Michigan blues that we should be so proud of!

From $6-12, there's something yummy in the selections for everyone!

Other great cherry items in the store

Cherry Republic is our main provider of dried and jarred cherry products that we sell all year round.  Travellers love to pack Cherry Republic for trips abroad to show the world our fruity side!

We carry pretty close to 30 of the Cherry Republic products as well as many other cherry items like the Natalie Robyn's Cherry Vinaigrette, a staff favorite (I think we each have a bottle with our name on it in the back fridge for our lunch salads!)

Other Michigan cherry delights include a Michigan Cherry Patricia's Chocolate, Michigan shaped Patricia's Chocolate bar (it's sprinkled with sea salt, dried cherries & blueberries and pistachios!)

Last but not least, if you're in the mood for cherry pie without chewing, try the Chateau Fontaine Cherry Wine!  Honestly it tastes just like cherry pie.  It's also great in a cherry cocktail with club soda or ginger ale on the rocks!
