Wine Talk by Art of the Table
July 11, 2011

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to take a trip to Washington State. It's had been over 8 years since I'd been there, just before the store opened and we learned a LOT about wines of Washington on that trip!

One of the things we learned then is that Washington wines are generally very, very good, but usually on the higher side of price as they're really small family vineyards with less supply.

On our trip, I had an opportunity to visit some wineries; Millbrandt, Airfield and Kestrel.  All were fabulous.

I was not able to visit

Three Rivers Winery

in Walla Walla,

however,

I got excited when given the opportunity to purchase a bunch of their excellent wines at less than half price!

This means $9.90/bottle on the whites

that are regularly $22-25

and $19.90/bottle on the reds - seriously amazing single vineyard red wines that should be $45!

Three Rivers Boushey Vineyards Syrah 2004

Though some think Syrah is falling behind in popularity due to being too overripe and jammy, Washington Syrah tends to balance ripeness and acidity, making it one of the best varietals grown in the state.  This wine, from Yakima Valley, received some seriously good ratings - 90 points to be exact from the Wine Advocate after some extensive Washington State research! It's not often you get this caliber of wine at this price no less with this much flavor.  It's big and bold with decent oak, chocolate and warm spices.  The tannings have softened but there's still plenty of structure of both fruit and acidity left to savor.  They only produced 380 cases of this wine and we have bought everything left in Michigan!

Three Rivers Champoux Vineyard Cabernet 2005

It has been hailed "The finest vineyard in Washington...Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills south of Prosser. From it come some of the country's finest wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. It's such a good vineyard that wineries including Quilceda Creek, Woodward Canyon and Andrew Will are part owners just so they can get the grapes they want every year. One of the finest wines coming from these grapes is made by Holly Turner of Three Rivers in Walla Walla. Here's a showpiece wine to bring out when you really want to impress someone."

I know that's just throwing accolades but we're honestly really lucky to have these bottles of wine from this vineyard gracing our shelves.  I've already put a bunch aside for myself as this is the kind of wine I love to stick my nose in and breathe.  Oh yes, I also like to taste it, but when the nose starts with black cherries and chocolate with some cedary oaky notes.  This should be called "the people's Cab", it will be popular with the Napa Cab crowd as it's full of those things that people like!

WHITES @ $9.90 a bottle

or $8.42 @ case price

regular price $22

***Often people think whites need to be consumed within one year or two of bottling.  This is not always necessarily true, and we find this is totally not true with these wines!  So before you judge these wines because they're 'older' - remember wines are like people, if you take proper care, you'll generally stay vivacious longer and age gracefully.

This is how all three of the following whites feel!***

Three Rivers Chardonnay 2007

While not a single vineyard selection, this wine is made up of carefully selected grapes from the Columbia Valley.  Peach, melon and bright lemon mingle in an easy drinking full and round wine.  Aged on the lees (skins) with gentle barrel aging give a pleasing end to this great wine.  Designed for the person who enjoys California Chardonnay but very pleasant even for those that don't.

Three Rivers Sauvignon Blanc 2007

Lately I've been enjoying Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand and from the Loire Valley of France but these guys have taken a little twist on the usual - and I think they made good of it!  Yes, that traditional hint of gooseberry is there surrounded by golden delicious apple and tropical fruit...What is really different is that this too (like the Chard) is aged on the lees and aged in small French oak barrels!  It adds depth that almost goes the way of Chardonnay but still plays nice!

Three Rivers Riesling 2007

This is the winner of the WOW award for me.  Riesling is a misunderstood grape most of the time.  Riesling isn't all sweet, it can be dry and off-dry, this one considered off-dry. So consider this flinty, minerally and full of crisp Asian pear in tandem with bright acidity and a slightly oily mouthfeel.  This is great with Asian food, with salad and with cheeses - especially our Napf from Austria.  If you've never had a Riesling like this, it's time to try!  And if you enjoy Alsace style wines, you shouldn't miss this one.
