We figure that summer means it's time to really give wheat beer a rundown.  Maybe it will help us melt down!
  •

Let's focus on 3 main types of wheat beers:

Belgian witbier

German weissbier

& American wheat beers

Within those 3 main categories there are many styles,

but the general jist is that there are other options than Oberon if you're convinced that's all there is...

(we aren't knocking Oberon, we carry it and it's from Michigan!)

Belgians typically have additional flavors added like coriander and orange peel, as do many American wheat ales.  German wheat beers have no additional flavors but are dictated by style and brewing process.  Below is a vast range of wheat beers with short descriptions to help you navigate your tastes.

Mix a 6 pack and find out what you like for yourself.

 In Our Cooler

Arcadia Whitsun ~ Michigan

An American wheat ale with orange peel added for flavor.  The beer is more Belgian in style and can be compared to Oberon but is more crisp and has a more definable raw wheat flavor.

Avery White Rascal ~ Colorado

**now in cans!** A Belgian white style ale with coriander and orange peel added.  The body is far more heavy than a traditional Belgian and the crispness from additional hops is a surprising treat.

Frankenmuth Hefeweizen ~ Michigan

German in style, Hefeweizens are unfiltered wheat beers.  However, this one from the newly revived Frankenmuth Brewing Co. spouts off with lemon and banana flavors which are integrated well in this beer with a faint hint of clove.

North Coast Blue Star ~ California

The absolute most American Renaissance wheat beer we carry.  Noble hops and malted barley make this delicious wheat beer light, fruity and refreshing.  The most overlooked beer in the cooler, but one of the absolute best we carry.

Weihenstephaner Kristal Weiss ~ Germany

A filtered wheat beer with delicious popping bubbles and a very clean palate and finish.  There's a loyal following coming about on the staff with this beer.  We're already in love with bubbles, now this!  A clean, almost sparkling wine like with wheat beer flavors.

Plank Bier Dunkler Wiezenbock ~ Germany

A dark wheat beer with caramelized fruit bread, plum, caramel, stewed prunes and a subtle nuttiness.  This beer is dark and ruddy compared to your typical wheat beer, but it's extremely tasty and slightly creamy with raisins and strong carbonation.

Hoegaarden ~ Belgium

Very crisp and lemony with hints of coriander and subtle citrus zest.  We can't leave this one alone! A supremely refreshing beer.

Leffe ~ Belgium

Creamier in style with banana tones and spiced with clove and lemon-like zest.  An instant favorite to those who try it.

Back in this week is Hacker Pschorr Hefeweizen, because Amy doesn't want to live through a summer without it.
