Beer Talk by Art of the Table
May 26, 2011

The German nation is one of tremendous pride,
attention to detail and of loyal nature...
This is undeniable when it comes to German beer as well.

Since as early as 1434 German beer has been governed by the Reinheitsgebot (I love saying that! It's the Bavarian Purity Law, rather boring sounding in English...)
which only allowed the use of water, malt and hops to produce beer.

The law wasn't an official law until 1516 and was removed in 1988, though many brewers stuck to it.  Reinheitsgebot.  Ultimately the un-lawing of it allowed some new start up brewers to brew beer in a competitive manner against micro-brew styled beers.

If you want to get picky, Louis Pasteur's discovery of the effects of yeast in beer in 1857 allowed for yeast to be used according to the Purity Law.

Germany's per capita consumption of beer is only behind the Czech's and the Irish.  So if you think you can handle putting down a few beers, head over to Europe...they'll teach you how it's done.

Below are a few of our favorite selections available to us in the state of Michigan.  We hope you find them delicious as well.

 In Our Cooler

Weihenstephaner Kristall Weissbier

Kristall Weissbier is a filtered wheat ale, whereas the more popular style of Hefeweizen is an unfiltered wheat ale.  The flavors are more delicate but considerably substantial.  Clove and delicate fruit are found on the nose and the palate has beautiful carbonation delivering clean tones of soft fruit and subtle spice.

This is a new found staff favorite all around!

weihanstephan

Weihenstephan Brewery is the oldest established brewery in the world and has been commercially brewing since 1040.  We also carry their HefeWeisbier and Original Premium

Unertl
Weißbier
Certainly not what you might expect if you were to purchase a bottle without knowledge of Unertl.  unertlUnertl is an ancient recipe using a unique strain of yeast and chocolate malts to give it a dense, dark color and slightly chocolate/toffee aromas and flavors.  Interestingly enough, flavors of sweet lemon and clove are present as well.  This is a very complex and delicious beer.  Plus there is active yeast in every bottle!
It just keeps getting better.

Ayinger Celebrator Double Bock  It may be one of the most popular Doppelbocks on the market, but there is a reason for that.  Its richly complex balance of power and soft flavors is unmatched.  Deep toffee and caramel is alongside rich roasted pure malt and finished off by an elegant and crisp hop.  Certainly a delicious brew.

Plank-Bier Dunkler Weizenbock
Widely loved by those who have had it, it combines the best of both Dunkle beers and wheat ales.  Truly a cross breed full of deliciousness.  Toasty malts and hints of toffee support the banana cream and lemon tartness that is so beautiful on the nose and palate.  To round it all off, the generous 7.5%ABV
really supports the beer nicely.
