A Little Love for the Lager

We often think of the lager or pilsner as the status quo of the beer world.  Budweiser, Miller, Coors, Stella Artois...the list could stretch miles.  They dominate bar taps and television ads and nearly everywhere you go in the world, you can surely get a lager.

Beer lovers often "snub" the style and sadly, a lot of brewers just brew a lager style beer without much craft or effort because they are sick of people trying to order a Bud Light at their pub.

Believe it or not, lagers had a hard time being accepted as a new beer style for many years.  Many producers were forced to "micro-brew" their light cold aged ales outside the city walls and established brewers denied the style.

Lagers are brewed and stored with bottom feeding yeast at cold temperatures, whereas ales use top fermenting yeast and are usually brewed and stored at room temp, sometimes even hotter.

In 1953 a New Zealander by the name of Morton W. Coutts may have in fact killed the modern lager with his invention of continuous fermentation.  Basically, beer could be massed produced in large quantities, but with a serious loss in flavor.  Pre-Prohibition ale houses were making very flavorful and amazing lagers unique to their town and brewer, much like our micro-breweries of today.

There are a few breweries in this country still dedicated to the production of great American lager.  We love the beer they are producing and wanted to let you know about them...this ain't no PBR.

 In Our Cooler

Brooklyn Lager ~ Brooklyn, NY
A Vienna styled lager, golden blond in color, dry hopped and crisply refreshing.  This is what brewer Garrett Oliver calls a true throwback to Pre-Prohibition American lager.  This friends, is a good, quality beer with a lot of care given to it.  And we even have it by can or bottle. Your choice.

beer bottlesVictory Prima Pils ~ Downington, PA
An off the wall pilsner with a crisp taste and a whole boatload of hops.  Uniquely piney with hints of eucalyptus and citrus, but calm, cool and super refreshing without being heavy on the palate at all. It's a summer session beer for IPA lovers and hop-heads.

Lagunitas Pils ~ Petaluma, CA
A true Czech style pilsner with a li'l American love from a touch more hops (not as intense as the Victory Prima Pils).  One of our employee's boyfriends is a huge Pilsner Urquell fan.  We were out, and he needed something to satisfy the craving.  I suggested this beer, and he's been buying it ever since...loves the stuff.  It's a truly great refreshing beer with true dedication to it's quality...it's no Miller Light!

We have a very good selection of really nice pilsners and lagers in the cooler, everything from straight up traditional Weihenstephaner to Bell's Lager of the Lakes and Berghoff's Prairie Lager...the list really keeps going.  We also have some great Dunkels and dark lagers to select from.  Come mix a 6 and see what you like.
You might shock yourself.
