Pandemonium (not the Shorts beer) hit the streets very early last Saturday morning on Grandville Avenue in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hundreds of people lined up in front of and around Founders Brewery in hopes of getting one of the *only* 275 cases of Kentucky Breakfast Stout released at 11am.
Tickets were handed out to the first 275 in line and very few people after that were lucky to get a few straggling bottles and more people went home empty handed than not.
The insanity is, there were a shocking number of individuals who drove across multiple state lines to get the chance at a case and still went home with nothing. One guy drove clear from Eastern Pennsylvania and only was able to get a pint at the bar...not the case he was hoping for.
The buzz on Beer Advocate is absolutely insane. People all over the country are complaining.
I wish this were a lead up to "Hey! We still have some!!!" but it's not. We ran out within the first hour it was here. Each retailer was allocated only a small amount. There were literally people driving around behind the delivery truck from stop to stop to get their hands on a few select bottles. All of this for a 12oz beer?
All to point out, this is pretty darn amazing, it's just to say ~ we have beers in the cooler with higher accolades than KBS and they are in stock...right now!
Here are a few beers with limited release and/or high pretention that you can snag from the cooler in the present time. They too are delicious. |

Trappist Rochefort 10 ~ Belgium Often considered the best beer in the world by experts and user rated scoring systems alike. The deep brown with highlights of red when held up to the light is truly beautiful. The aroma hits with wild yeast, dark malt and fruit and a hint of raisin. The palate is almost overwhelming with caramel, dark fruit, malt & complex sugars. It is an incredibly complex beer, yet rewardingly easy to drink.
Short's Mystery Stout ~ Michigan This special release oatmeal stout with cocoa and molasses is a beast. The ABV rings in at 10.8% and the flavors are a sensory overload. There is something strangely wild about this brew. It isn't a wild beer by the traditional term, but the flavors can't seem to be contained. Once you think you've nailed the profile, the next sip changes your mind. It truly is a mystery.
Bell's Hopslam ~ Michigan Yep ~ back for round 2! It's that wonderfully hoppy goodness wrapped up in a blanket of warm honey. Crazy aromas of caramel, citrus hard candy, grapefruit and honey all meld into a balanced and powerful flavor and huge mouthfeel. I'm very happy for round 2.
Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree ~ Michigan This limited release is brimming with pine and grapefruit on the nose. The palate is well rounded by the 12% ABV, leaving a sweetness on the finish. Don't be fooled though, the hops are intense in this brew...it'll sneak up on you...
