Wine Talk by Art of the Table
March 8, 2011
When a new winery pops up and we get the chance to carry some great small production wines, we tend to jump at the chance...but only if the wine is worth it ~ Marimar Estate wines are just that.

Marimar Torres has been involved with the wine industry her whole life.  Born in Barcelona, Spain in 1945, she traveled extensively as the Export Director for their Torres wines before she moved to California in 1975 to take on North America.  Early on she was shunned as a woman doing business in the wine world, but she overcame adversity and took Torres wines from 15,000 cases imported annually to the U.S. to 150,000 in just 10 years.  Not only is she a major force in the wine industry, she is also a well respected Spanish cookbook author.

Marimar Estate is her passion project.  Quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley and the Sonoma Coast Appellation.  The Don Miguel Vineyard, named after her father, is located in the Russian River Valley/Green Valley sub-appellation and the Dona Margarita Vineyard is located in the Sonoma Coast Appellation.  The wines are certainly a wonderful example of the Sonoma County region, but beyond that they express layers of tradition in wine making well beyond California even being discovered or recognized as a state.

Marimar Estate represents passion for quality wine and quality life.  This is something we can get behind wholeheartedly.
On the Shelf

Marimar Estate Don Miguel "La Masia" Pinot Noir

A complex blend of 6 different Pinot Noir Clones, this wine is unfiltered, unfined and completely elegant and delicious.  The cool climate of the Russian River Valley is ideal for growing truly expressive Pinot without all the spice and heat that would lend a need to be filtered.  Obvious aromas and flavors of raspberry and cherry, with hints of blueberry, dried herbs, pure cacao.  The surprise is that it finishes with minerality, a somewhat odd occurrence from California!  Marimar Torres also prides her wines on being elegant and drinkable, yet very food pairable.  We couldn't agree more.  Pair with a very lean cut of venison with carmelized onion and mushroom ragu over risotto topped with Pecorino Grand Cru cheese.

What We Can Order

Don Miguel Vineyard "Acero" Chardonnay

Unoaked and loaded with powerful crisp flavors, think of wine straight from Chablis with Spanish passion.

Don Miguel Vineyard "La Masia" Chardonnay

This is basically an oaked version of the Acero.  This wine sports crisp fruit with buttery tones and toasty popcorn.  Traditional and wonderful California Chardonnay tones with actual acidity and a clean finish.

Dona Margarita Vineyard "Mas Cavalis" Pinot Noir

What I would consider to be softer and more effeminate than the Don Miguel "La Masia" Pinot Noir.  Being only 7 miles from the Pacific Coast, this wine picks up on the sea air winds influencing the grapes and the cool night time fog.  More fruit forward and a bit softer. Certainly a lovely wine.

Prices are comparable to the La Masia Pinot Noir,
