About Barley Wine Ales

Barley Wines are something to get excited about,
yet not much is really said about the strong ale with
mad potential for aging.

Unfortunately, not many breweries are experimenting with barley wines, but the ones that are are doing a fantastic job creating interesting ales with character, strength and amazing flavor.

Barley wine isn't a wine, it is very much so beer.  Rumor has it, when grapes weren't available in the UK (they rarely were), they would make wine from grain...hence, barley wine.  The ales are strong, high in alcohol, and potent with flavor.  Here are a few of our favorites  ...and guess what?  they just so happen to be in our cooler as well!

In Da Coola'

Brooklyn Monster Ale
Incredibly bright when young, but full of life and deep malt flavor even though young.  When aged, expect rich raisin and toasty malt with density and layers of sweet, rich, savory and bitter flavors.

Arcadia Cereal Killer
Huge syrup flavors with tones of thick caramel, toasted bread, toffee and molasses.  I haven't had it aged yet, but oh my goodness, it has to be extraordinary.  I want to see Tony the Tiger try to fight this guy...it wouldn't end well.

Sierra Nevada Jack & Kens Black Barleywine
A collaboration with Jack McAuliffe, "the original microbrewer", and it's as expected: AWESOME.  Black coffee flavors backed up with raisin, orange peel and toffee on the palate.  Age this, please.  There isn't much left, so you'll need to act fast...and then have the patience to sit on it for a few years.

North Coast Old Stock Ale
Technically an old ale, but it's really the same thing as a barleywine.  Deep fruit flavors enhance this beer, without any fruit being added.  The alcohol is high, the color is rich and deep, almost chestnut-like and the aroma is reminiscent of red wine.  Has the potential to age over 10 years, with the possibility of up to 15...maybe more, who knows.  Or you can drink it tomorrow.  Can't hurt.

Fuller's Vintage Ale
Bottle conditioned and produced annually from Fullers finest malt and hop selections.  We currently have the 2007 in stock, and it is delicious.  Rich and slightly tangy (from Fullers unique yeast) with wonderful aging potential.  This is by far the most elegant barleywine style beer I've ever had.  Wonderful aromas and an enchanting color.  Only 150,000 bottles were made, that isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things.  We have what we have, grab a couple bottles for you and enjoy now, later and way later.
