Wine Talk by Art of the Table
January 17, 2011
This week's highlighted wines come from the Northern Rhone region of Crozes-Hermitage.  Producer Ferraton Pere et Fils has a dedication the the land it has known so well, the history behind their passion and a promise to sustainable farming to continue to produce small batch, high quality wines year after year.

These wines are not new to our store, actually, they have been here for a few months now.  We have done some features with them at wine tastings and Brandon loves to talk about them from time to time.  What is special is they are under $20 now!  $18 to be exact.  These are wines that are a huge value at their normal $25 a bottle, being that they are so amazing that they're comparable to wines 5 times their cost.  We've always loved them, and now we are ecstatic we can share them with you more readily with such a friendly price tag.

Visit Ferraton's website for even more info about this amazing winery in the often over-looked Northern Rhone.

La Martiniere Wines

Blanc (White)

100% Marsanne, this wine displays an earthy butteryness on the nose followed by muted fruits and banana bread on the palate.
A slight cooking spice complexity arises and the wine finishes clean with fruit driven acidity.  A very calming wine, it can best be paired with oily fish dishes, consider a coriander & cayenne pepper seared red snapper with a cilantro lime broth
topped with spiced crab claws.

Rouge (Red)

So incredibly well made, it is a steal at this price.  100% Syrah, and comparable to wines from Cote-Rotie or Condrieu, but without the $100+ price tags.  Fresh and vibrant with amazing red fruits, solid minerality and good acidity that balances the wine wonderfully with a touch of softened herbs in the mix.  We poured this at a tasting once and the French-cut lamb 'lollipops' with tomato mint relish were a near perfect match.
