Wine Talk by Art of the Table
January 4, 2011
2010 was an exciting year at Art of the Table - and we're looking forward to a full & fun 2011!

Old wines that have been your favorites still going strong are here to stay.  Also, a lot of new wines came through our door that have had incredible responses to them.  For that, we thank you.

We are glad we can provide quality wines at affordable prices & that you enjoy them!  We really do try a ton of 'not so quality' wines to find the ones that we think really have something special.

You might find a new favorite...
Reds
Casa de Campo Cabernet Sauvignon, Argentina
By far, the most popular wine of the year.  We tasted through the whole Casa de Campo line, expecting the Malbec to be the winner of the bunch.  While it was good, this Cab was and is outstanding for the price.  Focused raspberry and blackberry on the nose, with effortless cherry and raspberry on the palate with hints of earth and dried herbs as well.  This wine is perfect for Tuesday nights.
$7.75

Quo Grenache, Spain
100% Grenache (or Garnacha) aged in stainless steel without any influence of oak.  Incredibly focused and bright, this wine has a brilliance that is rare to find.  While still carrying the spicy and earthy traits usually found in Grenache, the fruit is much more pronounced with cherry, raspberry and the white top of a strawberry.  Also new this year, and here to stay.
$11.00

Marietta Old Vine Red, California
Certainly an old favorite around here.  From day one, we found that this has a super smooth and rich body with delicate red fruits and jammy goodness.  Not a sweet wine, but certainly not going to dry you out with tannins or acidity.
Wonderfully easy to drink wine.
$13.75

Casa Silva Carmenere, Chile
Not an old wine, not really that new either.  It's in that place of excitement, but now a staple as well.  Lovers of this wine really love it.  Its chocolaty tannins and sweet cherry fruits blend so nicely with the earthy spice and slightly peppery bite.  A very well crafted wine and a favorite in its native land as well.
$12.90

Bila Haut, Cote du Roussillion
A new wine to us in 2010, we are quite honestly shocked at how much of this we've gone through.  It's awesome wine, but on the slightly obscure side of things.  Kind of a Rhone blend but from the Mediterranean area, this wine has spice, class and great structure. Some of us think it is the most romantic wine in the shop.
$14.00

Protocolo, Spain
Protocolo goes in great waves of popularity.  Yes, the label is really ugly, but the wine is really great!  100% Tempranillo brimming with blackberry, black cherry, coffee and spice on the nose.  In the mouth it's smooth and plush with rich tones of chocolate, cassis, kirsch and toast.  The tannins are well integrated as well.  This is just a comfortable wine to drink.
$8.50

Coto de Hayas, Spain
The best selling wine in Art of the Table's history, and for good reason.  A blend of Grenache and Tempranillo with spicy red berry and notes of sage, violet, toast and tea.  The tannins are rich, and the wine is much bigger than the price tag.
$9.00
Whites
Destinea Sauvignon Blanc, France
From the Loire Valley, this is not the Sauvignon Blanc you think of from the likes of New Zealand.  While still citrusy and carrying tones of grapefruit, the wine has a very driving minerality with softer acidity and a very focused dry finish.  One of the most
versatile food whites in the entire store.
$11.50

Pellehaut Blanc, Gascogne, France
A popular wine here for a very long time, with very good reason. Balanced and citrusy, it's dry but more of an off dry.  I never find sweet tones in the wine, but the mouthfeel is so wonderful and easy to drink I can't possibly call it bone dry.  Not that I don't like bone dry wines...I do.  This is just very pretty wine at an outstanding value.
$9.50

Clos Robert Chardonnay, Central Coast California
It was a long search to find an oaky Chardonnay that still showed off nice fruit and citrus.  It was even harder to find that at a value.  Well, we found it.  Clos Robert is buttery and oaky, but the orange peel and lemon still shine through like holes poked in a barrel with a lamp sealed inside.  It's a great wine for shellfish too.
$11.75

Shine Riesling, Germany
A very simple, semi-dry Riesling without much fuss or flaw.  A favorite of many of the staff members, the sweet tones of honeysuckle, pear, orange blossom and lemon acidity come together nicely.  A certain crowd pleaser for the sweeties in life.
$10.75

Goulart Torrontes, Argentina
Still floral and plush, but an interesting addition of citrus and noticeable acidity that you wouldn't normally find in Torrontes. Argentina's current hot white wine grape, this wine is friendly, approachable and interesting.  We're big fans of this wine.
$13.50

Cusumano Insolia, Sicily
Pineapple driven palate, with hints of flowers and butter cookies on the nose.  Insolia is indigenous to Sicily and a wonderful expression of a dry white wine grape.  It has enough body to stand up to some very heavy seafood dishes and interest enough to
sit down to some cheese.
$10.25
Bubbles
Lelle Prosecco, Italy
Certainly one of our most popular sparkling wines, if not our most popular.  This extra dry Prosecco is lemony and herbal with nice, big popping bubbles and hints of orange peel and sweet grass near the finish.  Wonderful to mix, wonderful to drink.
I love this stuff with spicy Thai food.
$12.50

San Silvestro "Dulcis" Moscato d'Asti, Italy
Yes, this is that sweet, mildly bubbly stuff that everyone has been going nuts over for the past couple of years.  This one's pretty dang good too.  By far our most popular and also the Moscato of choice for restaurants "in-the-know".  When you want a Moscato, you want it sweet, and that's this.  Dulcis sports white pear tones with powdered sugar, lemon cream, white flowers and whipped sugar frosting.
