Beer Talk by Art of the Table
December 30, 2010

It's time to let you know about some of the new stuff we've got in the swanky vintage cooler of awesomeness...filled with beer,
smells like cheese...my kind of place to be.
Newbies
Short's Brewing "The Wizard" Barrel Aged Barleywine
The specifics of this beer are intimidating.  A rumored 12% abv and spent two years aging in bourbon barrels with raisins.  It's incredibly dark, with large bourbon and oak flavors balanced by vanilla, caramel, booze soaked raisins and a hint of licorice.  I think this may be one of the best bourbon barrel aged beers I've come across.

Short's Brewing "The Good Samaritan"
An amber beer brewed with apple cider.  It really reminds me of a crisp and nutty wheat beer.  The clove is very pronounced with sweet apple on the finish and moderate spice and banana on the mid palate.  A very enjoyable beer.  This beer would be so great with Chinese takeout or spicy Thai food ordered to go.

Lindeman's "Cuvee Rene" Grand Cru Gueze
New to AOTT, but certainly not a new beer.  This is one of Brandon's all-time favorite beers.  Incredibly sour, but in a very pleasing way.  It achieves balance and power with its lemon and over ripe apple tones, followed by sour spice and intensely crisp carbonation.  Instead of Champagne for a New Year toast, pour this into your flute.

Moylan's Dragoons Dry Irish Stout
A wonderful stout for the season, with dark expressions of chocolate, roasted coffee and toasty malt biscuits.  The taste doesn't deviate from the nose, and all together it's a great beer with a remarkably memorable flavor profile.  A must try for stout lovers.

And...they're back!

Dark Horse Brewing Co. Scotty Karate Scotch Ale
Nearly opaque, but deep red in color.  Obvious hints of scotch and caramel hit the nose with hints of fruit.  The taste continues on with assertive malt, dry crackers and a touch of caramel.  The alcohol is buried under malt.  It's certainly hard to tell this one is a whopping 9.75% ABV.  Love Founder's Dirty Bastard?  Try this.

Brooklyn Winter Ale
Well, the Scottish knew how to stay warm during the long winters...and Brooklyn Brewing Co. figured it out too!  A Scottish style malt ale with a brief hopping to balance the sweetness.  Sweet tones of molasses and caramel, with undertones of bitter pine.
Look out winter, this beer is coming for you.

Brooklyn "Monster Ale" Barleywine 2010
If you remember this from last year, you'll want to come back for more.  Actually, buy some for now, and some to age for later...this is a beer that will only get better with time.  Actually, it gets way better with time.

New Holland Dragon's Milk
Not much to say about this one ya'll...except for sorry it's been gone for so long.  You can come back in now and find it where it belongs.

Still some left...

Samichlaus
This beer is an outrageous malt ale, slightly aged - as it should be. This is a wonderful beer with sweet malt with liqueur flavors and nutty tones.  Complex is an understatement.  Also sporting raisin and plum notes with burnt sugar and an interesting crisp pear quality.  The fruit tones mellow with age, yet become far more noticeable in the balance.  Age this, please.  It's worth the patience to set most of it away and try one or two every year from
date of purchase for the next 10+ years.

Do you have us on your gift idea list - not just for the holidays, remember to ask for our "Beer of the Month" club for your next occasion gift.
