Beer Talk by Art of the Table
October 12, 2010
The leaves are changing color, football has taken over the television on the weekends again, and the sound of your neighbors lawn mower is no more...at least until next year.

Ok, now about beer.  Please, don't settle for same ol' same ol' when there are so many great fall options to choose from.  This way your friends won't make fun of you while watching the game...they'll be jealous.

Here are a few from our cooler to consider...
Those of Pumpkin Influence
Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela
Jolly Pumpkin's first pumpkin beer!  What's great about this beer is it's a pumpkin beer without all the malty, toasty spice flavors.  It's a sour ale, much like a Belgian Saison, and the pumpkin and cacao flavors balance well instead of dominating.  Incredibly drinkable and what I find to be the best example of a quality pumpkin beer.

New Holland Brewing Co. Ichabod
Wildly popular and honestly the most classic pumpkin beer with spices I can think of (maybe it's because I lived above New Holland when I turned 21...).  Whether it is or not, it's the pumpkin ale by which I judge all others.  It's my balancing point, if you will.  The pumpkin is strong, so is the nutmeg and clove flavor.  The nice thing is...this one is around for a while.  We'll have it in the cooler for most of the fall.

Dogfish Head "Punkin" Ale
Straight up, Dogfish Head does awesome stuff.  This beer is no different.  Full bodied and brewed with pumpkin "meat", organic brown sugar and non-descript spices.  It's a whole lot of flavor and a whole lot of good.  Try it before it's gone!

Southern Tier Pumking
This one is for the pumkin lovers!  Very "pumpkiny" and uniquely spiced.  This often goes under the radar, but if pumpkin beer is what you seek, then Pumking should certainly your next choice.

Those of Fall Persuasion

Short's Autumn Ale
I kid you not, this beer reminds me of raking leaves on a cool fall day.  One of my favorite things as a kid was to rake all the leaves into a huge pile, get a good running start, and barrel through them...rolling around with my childhood dog and getting dirty enough for Mom to get flustered.  Short's Autumn Ale is earthy, balanced and what I would call dry for a beer.  I love this stuff.

Sierra Nevada Tumbler
Dubbed an Autumn Brown Ale, this is a well crafted beer.  The malts are roasted literally just days before brewing, giving it full flavor and a unique fall-like quality.  This is a great sipping beer when it's cold enough for a sweater, but no need for a jacket...otherwise known as an awesome fall day.

Arcadia Ales Jaw Jacker
It may have a pumpkin on the label, but there is no pumpkin to be found in this beer.  It's an ale brewed with nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice.  Pretty much, it's a pumpkin beer without pumpkin.  No matter what it is, it makes for a nice fall ale.
