Beer Talk by Art of the Table
July 1, 2010
beer bottlesThe holiday weekend is basically here
and you know your family expects you to bring some super cool, wacky beer from that cool new brewery from someplace awesome.

And as you know we have some cool stuff.  You can buy a single, mix and match, or buy a sixer.  It's your choice.  Yay Democracy!
Tasty Wheats
Wheat beer is amazingly refreshing and incredibly diverse.
Some are simple, citrusy and clean.
Whereas others are complex with banana and clove, gritty,
unfiltered and heavy yet still refreshing.
Others are in between the lines, but a well crafted wheat ale
is a special treat no matter the style.

Shorts Anniversary Ale - Bellaire, MI
A wheat wine brewed with blood orange and peppercorns.  Amazingly hoppy and balanced with rich, complex flavors.  It is what it says it is.

St. Ambroise Apricot Wheat - Montreal, Quebec
Another "fruit" infused wheat ale, this time with apricots.  Very clean and ultra refreshing with loads of carbonation.  Mmmm, summer is here.

Arcadia Whitsun - Battle Creek, MI
This is not Oberon, but it is an amazingly decent seasonal wheat ale, also from Michigan.  Crisp and refreshing, it could be great with a lemon or an orange wedge (and great on it's own for all you non fruit beer drinkers).  Pick up a six of this instead and taste the difference.

Leelanau Brewing Co. Whaleback White - Leland, MI
The most "Belgian" in style of today's selections.  White ales are brewed with orange peel and coriander, often giving them a paler color and wild aromas.  Whaleback White is spontaneously fermented and bottle conditioned.  Aromas of grassy fields, orange, cooking spices and spiced tea lead to very full bodied and very dry flavor...much like a champagne (but this is NOT the champagne of beer by any means...)
A few other highlights from the cooler...

Brew Dog Dogma
Meantime IPA
Arcadia Sky High Rye
Arcadia Cereal Killer Barleywine
Short's Soft Parade
La Chouffe Houblon Dobbelen IPA Triple
Jolly Pumpkin Oro de Calabaza
