A Preview of Two Tastings
and some Sauvignon Blancs!

So I mentioned our tastings for this week on my last musings and I'm here to say that I'm really excited about them both - AND there's still room to sign up.

Also I'm getting freaky about Sauvignon Blanc.  We have 16 I think.  Find out what we have and why I love them below.

This week Thursday, May 13:

Rubini Wine Tasting Dinner + Plentiful Chocolate

Owned by the Rubini family since 1814, this estate was once a mulberry growing, silkworm breeding, then tobacco growing farm.  And their farm has a further storied past (If you want to read up on the family history, here you are!

Needless to say, this farm has been flourishing for over 190 years.

If you want to...rubini
  • hear the stories
  • taste the wines with Dmitri Pintar, directly from the winery
  • eat a three course meal that Chef Chad Miller has paired,
  • finish the evening with Dmitri's favorite Pignolo (a rich native Italian red varietal produced Amarone-style) and dark chocolate from Art of the Table

...then you should come.

It's quite seriously only $40 a person and that's a steal!
Thursday, May 13 @ Corez (919 Cherry SE) at 6:30pm

We must have RSVPs for by Monday at 5pm.
Please call or email me - the sooner the better, seats may fill quickly.

Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is one of my new best wine friends.
Everyone has an opinion about wine, right?

This is another of those wines that some people say
Sauvignon Blanc has too much...
grapefruit...lime, lemon...cat pee...grass.
I used to be one of those people, but no more!

So will you try again - or continue down your path of love for Sauvignon Blanc?

Sauvignon Blanc

*It was born in France (Loire and Bordeaux) but now resides all over the world; California, New Zealand & Australia, Chile & Argentina.

*From the Old World, though still very acid driven, it displays a ton more minerality, it's still crisp and light but it's more subdued - if one can say that about Sauvignon Blanc!  Looking for a French bottle?  It's usually a bit more costly is referred to as Pouilly-Fume or Sancerre as opposed to saying Sauv Blanc on the label (The Old World relies on regions instead of varietals to describe their wines.)

*In the New World, like New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc displays a ton more zip and racy fruits and makes your mouth really water.  It's very aromatic and usually does display lemon, lime, grapefruit and gooseberry in a more prevalent way.

*It's a relatively easy wine for beginning wine drinkers to enjoy as well because it's refreshing and has great fruit up front.  It also can be a wine that changes from bottle to bottle making trying new ones really fun.

Here are some of my current store favorites:

Ranga Ranga - Marlborough, New Zealand - In New Zealand, Ranga Ranga means "gentle breeze".  It will be the perfect sailboat wine then, right?  It actually reminds me of honig sbbrisk sea air as it's full of lime zest, passion fruit and a little herbal green fragrance that does scream fresh!  $14ranga ranga

Carlos Basso - Mendoza, Argentina - This is an elegant SB.  It says, put me at your dinner table and everyone will get along with me!  It's got excellent mouth-watering tendencies and gives way to green (peppers, herbs, etc) without being overpowering.  $12

Fire Road - Marlborough, New Zealand - Back in 2000 there was a giant fire in the region and a large majority of the residents got involved in fighting a giant fire and kept it from crossing the road to the fantastic vineyards and homes beyond.  This wine is an homage to those people.  It's filled with gooseberry, passion fruit and honeysuckle giving it very round and alluring qualities.  $12.25

Honig - Napa, California - Melon, lime and mango come to mind as this elegant wine saturates my mouth.  I love Honig wines because they're so careful to pay attention to details.  Honig has gone very 'green' in their farming practices since I've visited them and I'm excited that this wine rests on its skins for a bit and that they use a little tiny bit of neutral oak (not usually used in making Sauv Blancs) for a slightly more round finish. $17.50
This weekend was a crazy one for Amy, our apparently fearless owner.  Friday and Saturday were full days of studying and class time learning & reviewing all possible about wine and regions and more.  On Saturday afternoon Amy took - and passed! - the Entry Level Sommelier Exam.  Which in many ways means nothing.  In other ways, it means she's getting somewhere in wine knowledge ...an accomplishment at least.  Want to know more of her thoughts on the situation?  Read our blog!

Thanks for trusting us to pick out your everyday - and your special occasion wines.  We really enjoy it and enjoy having you to appreciate them when they leave the store!
