Wine Talk by Art of the Table
April 7, 2010
We have several wine tastings coming up in the next few weeks and we would really like to fill 'em up with fun people who love to taste new wines!
Our wine tastings are always laid back and fun - yet educational.
We'll be moving around to various locations too so you can experience different foods & local restaurants we love!

We do always insist that you sign up for our tastings ahead of time as we need a head count AND a way to get in touch in case we need to change or cancel.

One can always find more information on our wine (and other) tastings on
our website calendar as well!
Feeling like you need to get away - to Italy?

Next Wednesday, April 14, join us at Olives in East Grand Rapids to enjoy the sunset view from upstairs as we sip upon some amazing wines from Italy.

italy mapJason Kruggle, an importer of fine Italian wines will be with us to take a relaxing tour through six (or seven?) of his selections.

In our discussions of what to taste, I personally decided we have to taste the
Poggio Antico Madre.  I visited the winery a few years back and this stuff is killer!  This is a chance to taste Madre, (retailing right around $90) which is made of 50%Sangiovese and 50%Cabernet Sauvignon. They're aged separately for 18 months in 500-liter French oak and are then blended together. Once bottled, Madre refines in the bottle for an additional 12 months before it is released.

If you love Tuscan wines, you'll love this tasting.
We'll even provide antipasti AND an Italian styled appetizer.
6:30pm
Terra Andina Wines

ta2 Literally translated to "Land of the Andes", Terra Andina's award-winning wines
express the diversity of Chile's renowned terroir, with vineyards spanning the length of this proud Andean nation, including the prized Maipo, Rapel, Casablanca and Colchagua Valleys, as well as cutting edge regions like
Limari & Leyda Valleys.

Combining New World fruit-forward
voluptuousness with Old World balance and finesse, these wines never fail to please me no matter the 'level' of wine.

On the 29th, we'll be doing a side-by-side tasting of their
Introductory level
along with their
Reserve
Altos
& Suyai
so you can taste the difference yourself!

At only $15, this tasting will be a "walkaround", meaning you can come
anytime between 5pm & 7pm, try the wines, chat with the wine people and nosh.
There will be no formal presentation, just an opportunity to talk with the wine people.
Meet the Winemaker: Barnett Vineyards

Join us as we taste some very very amazing wines from Spring Mountain, California with Barnett winemaker David Tate
David understands difficult growing regions in and around Napa,
having previously been at Ridge winery and other respected wineries of the world.

He will share his wealth of knowledge with us while we sip on barnett vineyardswell-pedigreed wines that range from $32 to $132 and are always receiving accolades from those
who enjoy the big extreme California wines!

You can expect to taste Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from their estate's single vineyard sites.

Check out what they're doing here: http://www.barnettvineyards.com
and then join us at Corez on April 28 at 6:30pm
for a great experience of food & wine & a small group face to face with a winemaker.

Wines of the Week!

White Wine!

Lander Jenkins "Spirit Hawk" Chardonnaylander jenkins

My dinner last night consisted of one of those pizzas that contains every vegetable and herb in my fridge, topped with a generous serving of fresh goat cheese and THIS Chardonnay.  While chopping my ingredients, I was sipping and noting its fullness.  It had great pineapple, apricot and vanilla on the nose.  As I sipped I loved its bright fruit and its full mouthfeel right to the finish.  Full of ripe pear and stone fruits and its acidity made me long for more!  And for those of you interested, their winery uses 100% sustainable practices!

$12.50/$11.88/$11.25/$10.63

Red Wine!

Domaine des Amouriers "Suzanne"

amouriersMade up of one crazy blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Merlot, Caladoc and Cinsault.  Yes, it should come in around $20 but now amazingly priced due to our distributors' desire to move it!  Suzanne's got one rocky minerality for a personality yet brings to the table a fullness of great plum fruits and nuance.

Take her for a spin with lamb chops on the grill.

$9.75/$9.26/$8.78/$8.29

Remember if you're going to attend any tastings to sign up by calling us at 616.301.1885 or email amy@artofthetable.com
