Wine Talk by Art of the Table
Feb 28, 2010
It's time for March Madness!  Okay we're a little early on that one but it's official, we're celebrating March Madness in a whole new way - drinking wines that have to do with basketball - or other sports...

And there are a bunch of new wines on our shelves - particularly some Spanish ones we're loving and also some great new everyday quaffers for under $10!
 Tastings
Our entire tasting schedule for the winter/spring and part of summer is now available to view on our calendar - you can also pick up a copy of it in the store.

Our next tasting is going to be something foreign to me because
  • i'm not much into sports
  • i'm generally not into supporting celebrity wines
but we feel we should find out what the majors are making.

March Madness!!basketball

We're going to dive in (pun quite intended) for some
fun & adventure tonight.

Expect wines from Larry Bird's Legends lineup, Igor Larionov's hockey wines like Slapshot or Triple Overtime,
wines from rugby die-hards and more.

Join us for one slam dunk wine tasting!

What are all those funny numbers below?

wine rack

In case you've just tuned into Wine Talk or just can't remember what that string of numbers is in our wine features, I thought I'd do a quick reminder of what those all mean.

Using the example of the first wine listed below, the numbers are the prices we charge you based on the volume you buy.
If you buy

1-5bottles you get the first price - our everyday retail.
6pack mixed the second - 5% off.
12pack mixed the third - 10% off.
12pack straight case (all the same), you get an amazing 15% off!

Wines of the Week!

White Wines!

La Cana Albarino - Rias Baixas

With a rich aroma of white peach & ripe pear, this comes bounding out of the bottle with pineapple and citrus.  After this, a smidge of oak landing with a crisp minerality - a "perfect 10" mouthwatering finish.  I would totally drink this on its own before dinner or you could save some to have with your

'Simply Curry' dish.

$15/$14.25/$13.50/$12.75

Txomin Etxaniz Txocoli

The land is chalky clay, there's a lot of sun on the steep hills and the rain is often and of the misty sort.  With a huge nose of tropical flowers and some lurking herbs, this carries through in the mouth with medium weight and vibrant acidity.

A tinge bubbly, this wine will dance on your tongue and will pair well with your white anchovies & wine-cured Spanish cheese tonight!

$24.75/$23.51/$22.28/$21.04

Red Wines!

Evohe Garnacha "Vinas Viejas" 2007

100% Grenache, this is one killer big wine!  Aged in old concrete vats, this type of aging lends to a ripe, rich but dirty berry complexity.  Deep purple in color, stronger mineral & pepper shine through with notes of earth & elegance.  Great in your dining room with with herb-rubbed, oven roasted pork tenderloin.

$14.50/$13.78/$13.05/12.33

Opalia Cabernet Sauvignon

This easygoing wine from the Languedoc comes from Stephane Vedeau's personally owned vineyards.  He named these wines Opalia refers to the stone as there are many different types of Opal stones, he believes that these stones reflect the many different aspects of soil and climate in the region.

These are medium old vines (15-40 years) and they are aged in oak for 4-6 months before release.  You'll be excited to find flavors like black pepper, paprika and clove along with some ripe blueberry & raspberry developing into soft tannins.  Great with weeknight fare, I think you could elevate that boring chicken into something and drink this aside.

There's also an unoaked, very clean & pleasant Chardonnay available at the same price!

$8.50/$8.08/$7.65/$7.23

OTBN

Did you do an OTBN of your own this past weekend?  We would love to hear about it,
comment on the Art of the Table blog!
