Wine Talk by Art of the Table
Feb 23, 2010
There are so many things to tell you about in the world of wine here so today we'll update you on upcoming tastings, new wines in the store and inspire you to participate in a fun night called OTBN!
Tastings
Our entire tasting schedule for the winter/spring and part of summer is now available to view on our calendar - you can also pick up a copy of it in the store.

Our next tasting is going to be something foreign to me because
  • i'm not much into sports
  • i'm generally not into supporting celebrity wines
but we feel we should find out what the majors are making.

March Madness!!

We're going to dive in (pun quite intended) for some
fun & adventure tonight.

Expect wines from Larry Bird, Igor Larionov,
rugby die-hards and more.

Join us for one slam dunk wine tasting!

March 10, 2010  6:30pm

Stanley Lambert 'Pristine Chardonnay'

pristine chardonnayDistinctively fresh, this Aussie Chardonnay is kept in its 'pristine' form by using no oak in its development.  The soft pear and melon characteristics up front marry well with its crisp clean finish. Drink on Tuesdays with your chicken and mango chutney or possibly on Saturday with

el Jinete chips & Fiesta salsa.

$12/$11.40/$10.80/$10.20

Hahn Estates Meritage - Central Coasthahn

Mostly Cabernet and Merlot, this American blend does have all 5 Bordeaux varietals. As the wine opens up I get spice, cardamom and blackberry. Falling under the "Juicy and User-friendly" category, with sweet black cherry following black raspberry and toasty vanilla flavors. Drink with Aunt Sally's slow-cooked brisket alongside rosemary potatoes.

$16.50/$15.68/$14.85/$14.03

Darioush "Caravan"

caravanCabernet Sauvignon - Napa

This headed to our shelves after I ordered a bottle at six.one.six this past fall.  I couldn't resist its presence here to represent Napa Cabs in this range.  Darioush, a focused and intense winery, this top tier Bordeaux blend sports scents of toasty oak mixing with espresso roast, and black currants. Finely spun black cherries, chocolate, and mineral frame the silky tannins. Full bodied with incredible fruit purity and length. Perfect for grilled rib eye eteak au poivre with dijon-roasted garlic aioli panko fries.

$37.50/$35.63/$33.75/$31.88
OTBN

11 years ago, Dorothy & John, husband and wife wine columnists at the Wall Street Journal gave us a reason (or is it an excuse?) to OTB!  OTBN stands for Open That Bottle Night.  For the last 11 years it's been set on the last Saturday in February.  On this night you are encouraged to open that special bottle that's been lingering in your cellar - or wine rack - for far too long.

The way I see it, OTBN doesn't need to be on the last weekend in February as I have recently found an excuse to have a very cool OTBN of my own.

I also hope that if you don't have a collection of good stuff, that at least once a year, maybe this Saturday?, that you buy a cool bottle of wine and really enjoy it.  Have friends over, talk about it, revel in it.  It's just plain fun.
Sincerely,
