Art of the Table
January 4, 2010 Wine Talk - Winter Reds
So next week it's time for a new tasting schedule to begin. We've got two scheduled so far and in the very near future, you'll see 6+ more coming around the bend. One of them will feature an Italian winemaker whose wines are very affordable - two are in the store now for only $9.75 a bottle! (Also our first featured wine below)
So read on for details on next week's tasting that I nicknamed "$14".

We've definitely entered red wine season and over the past month have noticed you the gravitation toward that section of the wine rack more and more.
You all scooped up a lot of bottles for your holiday parties. Below are what, through casual observation, were probably the most popular reds over the last month. We found ourselves taking them home too!

Rondineto - Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
  $9.75 with discounts $9.26 / $8.78 / $8.29
A fun everyday country wine from Italy where the nose shows violets, red roses, and forest underbrush.
Super fresh flavors of black raspberry and tart strawberry mix with nice acidity. Easy going and rustic this will pair with a wide range of foods.

In fact, last week at my simple dinner made up of fettuccine and creamy vodka pasta sauce, my guests raved! It was a hit!

Tapiz Malbec - Mendoza
  $16.25 with discounts $15.44 / $14.63 / $13.81
Seeing 8 months of French oak this pours an intense violet color, with vivid aromas of black fruit, red cherry, and raspberries.
The velvety palate churns out mounds of crushed plum, more raspberry and spicy mocha notes.
This wine will give you that happy warm feeling all over, especially when paired with BBQ beef spare ribs that you simmered all day long!
Steele "Writer's Block" - Lake County
  $20.50 with discounts $19.48 / $18.45 / $17.43
A highly successful line from our BFF Jed Steele, this Petite Syrah is super fragrant with floral notes leading the charge on the nose with cedar, berry and spice playing a supporting role.
Medium in body with cherry, plum and ripe cassis flavors on a chewy finish. Try with fennel sausage pasta and it'll have you texting all your friends in only moments.
Decanters!!

Do you have a gift card from the holidays now burning a hole in your pocket?
We have plenty of decanters around the store ranging in size and price from $6 to $58.
Decanters primarily, serve two functions.
1) To help a wine "breathe" so that it can open up and
2) so that you can pour off the wine leaving the sediment in the bottle and avoid pouring it into your glass.
I also think they're quite beautiful when in use!
$14: Values for Fireside Chats

Though I wish I could charge only $14, we're getting close! This tasting will be a $20 (+tax & tip) well spent!
I'm ready to say that we've located six wines (two white, four red) that will scream cozy fireplace to you all.
And each will only cost a maximum of $14 a bottle.

If you want to buy any combo of 12 bottles, your price will be $11.90 a bottle. If you want to buy 12 of the same bottle at this tasting...it rachets down to $11.20 per bottle.

Join us so we can all be warmed together. We'll have fun too. Tasting is a great time had by all!
We do need you to sign up ahead of time for this tasting, next Wednesday night at Olives in East Grand Rapids. Please call the store or sign up on our website as seating is limited.

Yes, there's always a case discount!

Mix & match for 5% at 6 -11 bottles, 10% off at 12 mixed bottles, OR get a straight case at 15% off our everyday prices.
