January 04, 2010 Beer Talk - Winter Seasonals
So we survived New Year's Eve and now we're entering the cold winter months of January and February. Keep your winter coat on and take a stroll through our walk-in beer cooler. We have shelves full of new seasonals to help refresh you once you're ready to hunker down for the evening in front of the fire.
Brooklyn Winter Ale
  $1.55 per 12oz bottle
A Scottish-style ale clocking in at 6.1% ABV. This has plenty of roasty toasty malt character, caramel, and yeast aromas on the nose. The malt nuances interweave themselves into the toffee, cream, and slight hop oil found on the palate. A nice "middle of the road" winter ale. You couldn't do better than to enjoy this with your next batch of crispy squash blossoms filled with pulled pork and ricotta.
Magic Hat Howl
  $1.50 per 12oz bottle
Magic Hat's winter offering is an easy drinking black lager. Mustering a 4.6% ABV makes it worthy of session beer status. On the nose I got roasted grain and dusty espresso bean. The coffee note continues on the palate with milk chocolate and subtle vanilla additions. Don't let the dark color fool you, this isn't super chewy. Enjoy with camembert-caramelized onion quesadilla with apple chutney.
Samichlaus Bier
  $5.80 per 330 ml bottle
No, that's not missing a decimal point, this brew has more booze than some of the wines we have at the store with 14% ABV. Extremely rare, we scored a case last month of this Bavarian Doppelbock that is aged for 10 months before release. Aromas of syrupy-malt, plum, raisin, and chocolate-y liquor make themselves known from the snifter. The full throttle palate showcases grape skins, black tea, spiced cake, cocoa, and dried black fruits. One of the best beers ever made. I could see it working with some black forest cake with hot fudge sauce or just enjoy it solo.
