Greetings
Are you filled with mixed emotions come
September? Does part of you want summer to last
forever and another part of you is looking forward to
your new fall routine (or getting the kids back to
school)?
I know a part of me is a little sad to see my summer
begin to wind down and my more care free schedule
quickly filling up with work committments and school
activities. But I am also excited for fall and all
of the fun events Simple Balance will be participating
in and the new classes and new offerings we have to
share with you!
One of things I am personally working on is living in
the present moment , so I am going to savor the rest
of summer and live each day enjoying all it has to
offer. How about you?
When my September schedule starts to fill up, I am
going to make keeping balance in my life a priority
and to schedule in time to have fun and take good
care of myself.
Would you like to join me, in keeping balance in your
life and making health and wellness a priority? If the
answer is yes, and you would like some support,
Simple Balance offers alot of services and classes to
help you do just that.
Be sure to check out our calendar often as we are
always adding new things. You can also send us an
e-mail to be added to our weekly e-mail of
Upcoming
Classes and Events, if you aren't receiving it already.
In health and happiness,
Kelly

CAN I REALLY MEDITATE?
|
|
by Donna Messina
I say yes! Give yourself the gift of inner
peace. You deserve it! Meditation is a centuries-old
technique that can make your life happier, richer,
calmer and fuller.
It will help you to:
- Relieve Stress
- Relax the Body Automatically
- Concentrate with Ease
- Learn to Go with the Flow
- Get in Touch with Your Emotions
- Reduce Chronic Pain
- Become More Compassionate
- Heal Your Life Wherever You Are
- Live a Fuller, Richer Life
- It Helps One to Aspire to One's Own Dreams
Meditation does not require learning to sit in a full
lotus position nor does it ask that you learn difficult
techniques. It does require that you make a
commitment, starting with just a few minutes per day
for yourself. How difficult does that sound?
Meditation is simply the art of opening to each
moment of life with a calm awareness.
Try this at home. Find somewhere quiet where you
will not be distracted. (Be sure to disconnect your
phone.) Sit comfortably and simply take your attention
from your wandering thoughts and place it on your
breath. Do not try to change anything. Simply notice it.
How does it make you feel? Notice everything about
the inhale, the exhale, the physical body and what it is
doing. Don't judge anything as being right or wrong,
just sit with your breath for a few minutes.
If you can do this, then you can meditate. Do you want
to reap the benefits that I spoke of earlier in this
article? What are you waiting for?
Although there are many different forms of meditation,
I teach a very basic "Beginners Meditation" class that
allows you to experience different exercises that help
to quiet the mind. You will learn focal points to help
you to detach from your thoughts.
In the "Advanced Meditation" classes you may be
guided through a meditation, or you may be asked to
sit in mindfulness. That brings about a presence that
may reveal to you physical sensations that your body
is having, or what emotions you are experiencing at
the moment. You may even become aware of exactly
what your thoughts are at the moment.
The next "Beginning Meditation" class is being held
on Tuesday, September 9th and the first Tuesday of
every month after that. Click here
for more information.

FOOD FOCUS: ZUCCHINI
|
|
by Kelly Bollman
Zucchini is very versatile and can be used for a variety
of dishes, from pasta sauces to main courses. For
most dishes, try to use the zucchini before they
become too big, about 4-6 inches long. The giant
ones are best used shredded, in breads
and cakes.
There is no getting around it, zucchini is a plant that
offers abundance. Once the large, leafy vines start
producing fruit, it seems the zucchini literally grows
overnight. To get the most out of zucchini, while it is in
season, get creative and expand your zucchini recipe
arsenal.
Zucchini, not surprisingly, is good for you. One cup of
chopped zucchini has a mere 20 calories, but packs a
whopping 35 percent of your daily allowance of
vitamin C and 14 percent of Vitamin B6, plus other
good nutrients like potassium, iron and beta
carotene.
Choose zucchini with a vibrant green color and firm,
shiny, blemish-free skins. They taste best when used
as soon as possible. Store up to five days refrigerated
in a perforated plastic bag in the crisper.
Wash well, just before use only, and trim both ends.
There's no need to peel, and only seed it if you're
stuffing and baking - the seeds hold the fiber! Slice
into rounds, peel into long ribbons or grate. Zucchini
is a quick-cook veggie and best steamed, sautéed,
baked, grilled or raw (it's watery, so never boil). Cook
until tender-crisp; overcooking makes it limp and
mushy.
Come visit Simple Balance at the Harvard Farmer's
Market on September 6th, between 9-12, and enjoy a
delicious sample of Zucchini Pasta with Marinara
Sauce. You can learn how to make pasta out of
zucchini with a fun tool called a spiralizer. Click here
