Well-known civic leader and businessman L. Earl Armiger has been appointed Acting CEO of The Columbia Foundation, Howard County's community foundation. He replaces Beverley Francis-Gibson, who resigned to pursue another professional opportunity.

In announcing her resignation, Francis-Gibson said, "After three exciting years at The Columbia Foundation, I believe I have met the goals I originally set, so, since my contract will be ending soon, I have decided to resign at this time to pursue another professional opportunity. I wish everyone the best as The Foundation moves ahead into 2012."

Armiger, who is currently serving as Chair of the Columbia Foundation Board of Trustees, will hold the CEO post until a replacement is hired.

"As a long time donor and friend of the Foundation, I welcome the opportunity to step in and ensure that operations are uninterrupted while a search is conducted for a new President & CEO," Armiger said. Armiger, who is President of Orchard Development Corporation, is donating his services as a volunteer, he added.

"The Columbia Foundation has a strong staff, as well as a strong board," Armiger said, "and our mission of achieving life-long giving and connecting people, places and organizations to worthy causes remains our priority."

The 2012 grant process is underway and on schedule, Armiger noted. Over $625,000 was awarded last year to support 131 local human services, arts and cultural, educational and community services organizations and their activities, as well as to fund a dozen scholarships.

The Columbia Foundation celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010. It is the oldest community foundation in the state of Maryland.
