MUIR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS VISIT JPL THROUGH NEW "MUIR TO MARS" PARTNERSHIP

Students from John Muir High School's three College & Career Pathway Academies connected classroom science and math lessons with the work-day of some of the country's top scientists and engineers during a job-shadowing day at Jet Propulsion Laboratory on April 28. PUSD's College & Career Pathway initiative prepares students for both college and careers.

The job-shadowing "Bring a Mustang to Work" day was part of a pilot partnership between JPL, the PUSD, and PEF that helps students connect rigorous academics with exposure to college and career opportunities. Unique to Pasadena-area public schools, the partnership called "From Muir to Mars" aligns a variety of science and engineering, business, and arts-focused supporters from JPL to the John Muir High School's three Academies: Engineering and Environmental Science, Business and Entrepreneurship, and Arts, Entertainment and Media.

PCC INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS VOLUNTEER IN PUSD CLASSROOMS

International students belonging to Pasadena City College's Global Club are gaining a unique view into the American public school system by helping kindergartners who are learning Mandarin Chinese through PUSD's Dual Language Immersion Program. The program is supported by PEF.

Every week a number of these college students, who themselves have come to Pasadena from China, Hong Kong, and other parts of Asia, venture to Burbank Elementary school to volunteer in teacher Tina Chan's Mandarin Chinese Immersion kindergarten class.

The Global Club began this volunteer effort a year ago with about 20 students. This year about 38 students volunteer.
