PEF'S SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM A BIG DRAW
SEP Registration

News reports may lament the lack of summer school programs in a state budget crisis, but thanks to PEF, almost 1600 students entering kindergarten through high school are enjoying a rewarding summer school experience. PEF's sixth-annual Summer Enrichment Program began on June 29 as students flocked to either Hamilton or McKinley schools for five weeks of classes. The 765 students in the K-8 program are delving into such diverse subjects as robotics and gardening. And 70 high school students are learning drivers ed and computers. Although families are charged a tuition, the program is subsidized by PEF, with generous contributions from the Webster and Schow Foundations as tuition doesn't cover all costs. We wish all students a rich learning experience, and thank our 60 participating teachers and principals and eight instructional aides for their expertise and dedication.

In addition to these programs, PEF works with the PUSD to offer enrichment to 800 middle school students who are attending summer school to boost their math and reading skills. They also enjoy choral, cartooning, drama, computers, and more.

PUSD Receives Multiple Pathways Grant for High Schools
The PUSD was awarded a $1.175 million grant to implement a comprehensive high school reform strategy for students throughout the district. PUSD is one of six California school districts selected by ConnectEd: the California Center for College and Career to receive the grants, funded by The James Irvine Foundation, with PEF as the grant recipient. The funds will be used to establish ten high-quality pathway programs organized around career themes or industry sectors.

Multiple pathways programs connect learning in the classroom with real-world applications by integrating rigorous academic instruction with a demanding technical curriculum and work-based learning, and prepare students for success in college and careers.
