TEACHER AND PRINCIPAL GRANT WINNERS SHARE BIG SMILES

PEF's Making Teachers Smile awards were presented to 13 PUSD teachers at the foundation's Annual Event on June 2.

The program provides grants of up to $2,500 for teachers, and now principals, to pursue professional growth opportunities to enhance their teaching. Teachers received funds to travel to India on a cross cultural exchange, attend math and reading conferences, as well as attend classes on writing and science.

PUSD SENIORS RECEIVE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
AIM High 2009

 PUSD students receiving the AIM High scholarships and the PEF/PHS Wark Scholarships were honored on June 4 at a reception at the Tournament of Roses. This year 33 seniors received $140,000 in scholarship funds. Sixteen students were awarded scholarships to attend four-year colleges and universities that include UCLA, UCBerkeley, Occidental, USC, and Columbia University. Fifteen students received funds to attend community colleges, primarily Pasadena City College.

Students winning the AIM High $10,000 Inspiration Awards and PHS/PEF Wark Scholarships: Jonathan Graff and Jose Palomares, Blair IB Magnet; Morgan Tucker, John Muir High; Luis Aguilar and Sydney Taron, Marshall Fundamental; Kristine de La Cruz, Alex Collazo, Sinead Collazo, Sierra Senzaki and Guillermina Nava Rodriquez, Pasadena High School.

Students winning the $4,000 Incentive Awards: Kenneth Candray, John Muir; Mallory Browne and Adonai Haile, Marshall Fundamental; Marissa Sanchez and Matthew Vine, Pasadena High School.

Students winning the $1,000 Hope Award: Andres Hernandez, Arcelica Medina and Maurico Moreno, Blair IB; Joshua Jones, Cynthia Ponciano and Zulay Saldena, John Muir High; Daniel Del Hoyo, Isamel Hernandez, Sarine Papazian and Srbuhi Poghosyan, Marshall Fundamental; Daniel Larranago, Janette Hernandez, Andrew Paisley, Tatev Papikyan, Andrea Ramirez and Jose Villalon, Pasadena High School.

Claudia Rocha of Muir won the Gates Millennium Scholarship and Vivian Xue of Marshall won the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.
TEN "KIDS WITH A HEART" HONORED

PEF and Paseo Colorado honored ten remarkable PUSD students on May 14  at the third annual Kids with a Heart ceremony. Students were nominated by their teachers for extraordinary qualities of caring and concern. 

The nine finalists are Isaiah Freeman, 9, Longfellow Elementary; Samantha Gale, 13, Eliot Middle; Johnathan Henderson, 12, Altadena Elementary; Addison Hunter, 9, Hamilton Elementary; Melia Jost, 7, Sierra Madre Lower School; Miles Kealing, 7, Daniel Webster School; Zasmine Lopez, 8, Norma Coombs Elementary; Kayla Rice, 12, Sierra Madre Lower School; Caren Vargas-Soto, 17, Pasadena High School.

More that 300 community members and civic leaders gathered to celebrate PEF'S many achievements, and the students, teachers, and principals of the Pasadena Unified School District. PEF's Annual Event took place June 2 at the Norton Simon Museum.

John Van de Kamp, a long-time PEF supporter and graduate of John Muir High School, introduced this year's guest speaker Ramon Cortines, superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District, who delivered a thoughtful presentation describing the challenges of urban education in today's uncertain economic environment.

REGISTRATION STILL OPEN FOR PEF'S SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Families still have time to register for the 6th-annual program that takes place June 29 - July 30. Though many classes are now filled, some still have space. Check PEF's web site for class status.
