PEF SPONSORS ADMISSION MATTERS Workshop helps students and parents gain insight into the college application process
About 200 high school students and their parents attended free workshops that provided expertise and insight into the complicated matter of applying for and getting into college. "Admission Matters: What Students and Parents NEED TO KNOW About Getting into College" took place March 25 at Marshall Fundamental School. The event was presented by PEF and co-sponsored by Assembly member Anthony Portantino and USA Funds. Students and their parents had a special opportunity to attend workshops that provided tips on completing a college application, applying for financial aid, taking the SAT/ACT tests and other testing, and navigating the College Board website. PEF thanks Victoria Campos and Connie Baza of the CSULA, Upward Bound Programs; Kim Miles, financial aid director at PCC; Britanny Lewis, UCLA VIP Programs; and Penny Sommers, senior educational manager of the College Board. As well, thanks to the student ambassadors from Cal State LA, PCC, and UCLA who were on hand to meet with students. SUCCESS STORY! Teacher uses PEF grant to purchase classroom puppets
A bunch of characters are hanging out in David Earnhart's third-grade class at Washington Accelerated Elementary; there's the Gameshow Guy, Math Monster, Officer Siren, and Professor Peabody. In all, Earnhart employs about 16 puppets every day in a variety of ways to engage students with their lessons. They are clearly smitten. "Patchy the Pirate points at the words," explains 8-year-old Keniya Terry. "Today he helped us to spell 'courageous' and 'heroic.'" The puppetry idea came to Earnhart when a friend showed him a puppet he'd made. "I thought, wow, puppets are pretty cool," says Earnhart, who'd not had experience with puppets or acting before. (He's bestowed each puppet with its own voice and personality.) The friend made a Superman, which Earnhart brought to class and thus began the collection. A nine-year teacher at Washington Accelerated, Earnhart used his PEF teacher grant of $1170 to purchase the additional puppets that now occupy a corner in class. "The puppets have definitely helped me to make all the lessons more fun and interesting," he explains. "The students know that everyday a puppet is coming into a lesson and they look forward to that. Teaching is easier because it's like playing." Photo: Washington Accelerated teacher David Earnhart and friend. |
