Dear PEF Friend: PEF's recent public forum "Understanding California's School Funding Crisis,"
co-sponsored by the Five Star Coalition, was well attended by parents,
teachers, and community members. Almost 100 attendees took part in a
lively and informative discussion with Rick Pratt, an expert on education finance. These free forum are just one way
that PEF works to keep everyone in our community informed on matters of
education. We hope to see you at our next event!

SUCCESS STORY! An educator uses her PEF Teacher's Grant to help her students get it write.
|
In her first year of teaching Monique Garza was assigned to a fourth grade class at Franklin Elementary school. The year progressed well enough, but when her students took the State's STAR writing exam, given in the fourth and seventh grades, only seven percent passed. Students are asked to write in the
genres of narrative, summary, and response to literature. They must
display a good grasp of grammar, word choice, organization, and
content. Garza was alarmed and ready to take action. That summer she attended the District training "Step up to Writing." She also applied for a PEF teacher's grant. "I felt I didn't have enough resources to help my students get the scores that we wanted," Garza says. With her $700 PEF grant, Garza purchased the "Step Up to Writing" classroom program. She also purchased writing prompts and other writing activities that provided both mini lessons and resources for the students to use independently. Garza's diligence paid off. The next year 82 percent of her students passed the STAR writing test. Students were helped in part by the knowledge she gained through the District training, she says, as well as by the supplies garnered through her grant. "It really motivated my students to be better organized," Garza says. "I'll definitely apply for a teacher's grant again."
