Greetings!

The Pasadena Education Foundation is looking forward to another exciting school year and hope you will continue to support Pasadena Unified students on their road to success!

PEF had a great response to this year's Summer Enrichment Program at Hamilton, McKinley and PHS. Over 400 students participated in classes including art, choir, dance, cooking, chess, robotics (pictured here), explore science, debate and more at Hamilton. Introduction to Kindergarten and First Grade were also offered at both elementary sites. High school classes included driver's ed, pre-calculus, computer applications, SAT prep, and creative writing.

Funding from IndyMac and the Helen and Will Webster Family Foundation enabled PEF to offer 106 scholarships. Feedback from students, parents and teachers was very positive and many offered great suggestions on new classes for next year and areas to improve. So be on the lookout for when new program information for Summer 2007 comes out early next year!

The fourth annual Parade of Banners will let local businesses shine by spotlighting their support on these colorful banners that are posted throughout the Pasadena during the months of September and October. The banners help increase community awareness for our public schools and for the Pasadena Educational Foundation.

The culminating Parade of Banners event will then take place on October 23, 2006 at 10:00 am at the Paseo Colorado. Sponsored by PEF and PUSD Partners in Education, this event will feature a colorful procession of students with banners made thanking their Adopt-A-School business partners as well as the drawing for the Audi Sweepstakes winner. Banner sponsorships for this year will be available until September 1.

PEF is offering its first ever SWEEPSTAKES OPPORTUNITY courtesy of Rusnak Automobile Group. Only 2000 tickets will be sold at $25 each for a chance to win a 2007 Audi A3. The drawing will be held at the Parade of Banners event. Winner need not be present. In the event 1,120 tickets are not sold by October 23rd, PEF will award the ticket holder 50% of the net proceeds in lieu of the Audi A3. Call PEF at 626-795-6981 x 595 or 422 to purchase your chance now!
This year's deadline for PEF Teacher and All School Grant applications is November 1, 2006. Washington Mutual Foundation and Parsons Corporation have generously supported our efforts to provide teachers and principals with extra funds to support innovative classroom projects. Pictured here together with Margaret and Keith Russell are the smiling teachers who received the Margaret Russell Making Teacher Smile grants in June 2006. Current 2006-07 Teacher and All School Grant Guidelines can be downloaded by clicking on link below.
On the recently released 2005-2006 California Standards Test scores, the Pasadena Unified School District posted strong gains in 2006 compared to both the State and Los Angeles County. Among the highlights of the results is that the percentage of students scoring at proficient and advanced in English Language Arts since the baseline year of 2001 has increased for all grades, with over a ten percentage point increase at almost all schools including the four traditional high schools. District wide, mathematics scores have increased at all levels since the baseline year of 2002, with the exception of Geometry. In other subjects, the percentage of student scoring at proficient and advanced in History- Social Science has increased for grades 8, 10, and 11 since 2001 and overall scores in Biology increased by 10% from 2005-2006.

PEF continues its work to engage the community to improve public education and will be following up with the report we commissioned by scholar Richard Kahlenberg. We want to encourage even more of the constructive dialogue that has resulted from this report and hope you will join us at future forums and focus groups. If you have not already received a copy of the Kahlenberg report, please download from our website or call the PEF office at (626)795-6981, ext. 595.

Thank you and please e-mail us your comments and suggestions.
