Pearls of {Event Planning} Wisdom!
With graduation parties, holiday gatherings, and family reunions happening this summer, not to mention employee picnics and community festivals, now is a great time to recall our mother's words of wisdom:
Many hands make light work! Here's a little secret. Guests would rather help than stand around a party. Therefore, don't be afraid to politely delegate tasks (open wine, replenish ice) or agree to a guests' offer (to bring dessert, pass hors d'oeuvres).
Work smarter, not harder! Thanks to my friend and industry colleague, June Ring, these words are my daily mantra. Before tackling a project, I contemplate shortcuts that won't compromise overall quality. For example, hiring a caterer (or purchasing prepared foods to minimize expenses) allows me to invest my time in decorating and to enjoy my event!
Eat your veggies! Party food gets a bad rap. Offer colorful, flavorful and healthy food that's light on your waist as well as your wallet ... and your vegetarian, gluten-free or lactose-intolerant guests will be happy, too!
Do unto others! We all know that we should treat others as we like to be treated. This golden rule extends to our vendors, too - the people on our event team like wait staff, bartenders, delivery staff and musicians who work really hard to ensure our celebrations' success.
Laugh before you cry! Some details are uncontrollable ... like bad weather, union strike or traffic jam. You can cry but laughing is much more effective. It not only helps your body relax, laughter shifts perspective allowing you to deal more effectively with the problem!
Count your blessings! How many times have you heard this expression? It's so true! Too often we host celebrations that seem to end as soon as they start. About one hour into your event, step away from your guests, look at every aspect of the celebration (including your guests) and feel gratitude.
What are your favorite words of wisdom?
Mine is usually It is what it is but since becoming a mother, it's definitely You get what you get and you don't get upset! Ok, this expression really doesn't apply to events, unless you're thinking of the guest who arrives really late and there's only one entrée option left, but thanks to Pinkalicious (children's book), I say it a lot to my little girls ... and sometimes, it even works!
